I've searched thorough the other insurance threads and couldn't find anything that will work for me. I need full coverage on a '79 308 GTS. The tricky part is that I have no garage, just a canopy (so there goes Hagerty), I'm under 25, I've got two minor speeding tickets on my record, no accidents or anything else. I use Progressive insurance for my alfa and it's about $70 per month for basic insurance. I inquired about full coverage on the 308 and was quoted a bit over $2200 for a 6 month policy while basic was actually less than the alfa. Any company recommendations, or am I just going to have to pony up over $360 a month for insurance? The 308 won't be a daily driver, so a mileage restriction would be acceptable.

    Thanks,
    Chris

If you put a cover (with a lock) on the car every night, a collector's car insurance company might offer coverage. Have you asked Hagerty that question?

Actually, your age may be more of an issue than that.

My 308QV policy with Allstate is for less than $1000 per YEAR.

    Chris,

You said the magic words that guarantee high insurance rates -- under 25. If you are planning on using the car as a daily driver, you can shop around, but face it, until you are over 25, insurance will be high, especially on a sports car. There is a chance that you might be able to get collector car insurance, but usually they will want the car registered as an historic or collector car, and will limit mileage and use. Of course, the other thing that will up the cost is speeding tickets (to insurance companies, there is not such things as a "minor" speeding ticket).

So, depending on what your intended use is for the car, check out some of the collector car companies. But be sure that you ask about restrictions on mileage and permitted use of the car.

    Regards,
    Steve W.

Unfortunately, you have alot of strikes against you regarding collector car insurance.

-No garage (a requirement of every collector car insurance co I know of.)
-Under 25 (being 25+ is a requirement of most of the collector car insurance co's)
-Speeding tickets (Most collector car insurance companies won't even allow one speed cite or accident in the last 3-5 yrs)

So, my advice is to start stopping into local insurance agencies, asking to speak directly to the agent, (not a csr) and introducing yourself and explain your situation. Tell them you are looking for an agent/broker who you'd like to develop a long term relationship with.

A local agent/broker may be slightly more expensive than a 1800 number, but when you have a claim, it will be worth every penny.

There is a reason it costs more for guys under 25, hence the two speeding tickets.

Thanks for the advice guys. I knew it wasn't going to be easy due to my age among other things, so it looks like my best option may be to check into the local companies. Will check into Allstate also.

Looking forward to making my insurance agent wealthy,
    Chris

That's interesting. I did not know the Hagerty/garage thing. I was chatting with a rep this weekend and considering a swap from State Farm. I do not have a garage - just a car cover so I guess I'm out too.

I have a "full coverage" (whatever that REALLY means) with them for about $700 a year with a $1000 deductable. You should always get the biggest fattest deductable you can possibly afford. Always.

Not all men are created equal. Having had different kinds of sports cars, and logging on serious miles on everything from 2 to 4 wheels, not a ticket in sight. :)

To the original poster--do you really need the full coverage? I run liability on my TT, as I don't feel full coverage is really necessary (well at least for me). That is one way of lowering costs for people under 25.

Of course if your car is financed, then the lein holder probably requires full coverage, in that case, youmight have to pay the big bucks. Sorry to hear, but good luck nonetheless.

Ryan, you an exception to the rule, in both your points. And that's a beautiful thing! :)
