BTW, Tom Barrett's Mercedes 770 Phaeton sold for $153,000 in 1971 at the first Barrett-Jackson auction, and there were many more high dollar transactions before 1974. JDF
At that time Big Mercedes and Duesenbergs got money like that but Ferrari's were much less. I remember Stan Nowack setting the record for the second at Le Mans GTO (in class?) in the early 70's at about 40K. In the early 70's Tom Meade offered me a restored P4 for 19K and I'm sure it would have been made out of parts he scavenged. (See page 21) Heres what 0854 went for in 1970: 70 - given to Kirk F. White for sale, sold it to Carl Bross for $9,976.70
AMEN. And the photos of a couple of regular joes loading up another junked chassis on the back of a pickup back in 1974 speak for themselves too!
Art, you hit the nail on the head for me. My postition has always been that it takes more than a few scraps of UNnumbered frame tubing to actually BE a car. As you indicated, what happens when TWO people have TWO cars that contain scraps of an original frame? According to the ongoing "Phoenix" theory of 0846, if 3 or 4 people come forth with cars that contain pieces of the 0846 frame according to their "forensic examination", then we therefore have to say that there are 3 or 4 ORIGINAL 0846 cars!!!!!!! And of course, that would be absurd. No shirt, no shoes, no service. No numbers, no provenance, no car.
Arlie, Without the circumstantial evidence, you are right. However, Jim has built (and is still building) a pretty good case. Would you be satisfied with calling it a resurection using: what is likely a substantial portion of the original chassis 0846; an NOS body shell (now modified by incorporating the tail of another P4); and a more or less correct/original drivetrain? Personally, I don't care what its called, I'm interested in determining if the chassis is based on the mortal remains of 0846. Regarding the idea of two ro more people having bits of the chassis, or pieces of 0818 for that matter, I doubt it. Either Jim's chassis is made by Ferrari or it isn't. If it is original, the unaccounted for bit melted. For 0818, I don't know the story (my only knowledge on the matter is what was posted in this thread) but I would be willing to bet that either one car has the chassis or neither car does. Regards, Art S.
Sorry to be a continual party pooper, but no, I wouldn't call it a resurection. In my opinion (not really worth 2 cents), the car either has the genuine original chassis or it doesn't. Until that is proven, it doesn't have the right to be displayed with the number 0846. Yeah, I know, somebody will chime in with the fact that the car's number is listed on the Ferrari garage site. Ferrari also said the car was written off. So even Ferrari is dancing with 2 partners. They say the car "officially" doesn't exist. Then they list it on their site. Even they have their double standards. They probably don't even want to get involved in the whole debate. What's in it for them? Why bother?
For them to officially say "Yes, it's 0846" would be opening Pandora's box on all of the potential senarios you presented.
If somebody wants to call their car 0846 or 007 then whatever melts their butter. I could say that Elvis once raced my 57 Chevy panel wagon. I could take it on a tour of all the car shows. Who could prove me wrong? Did they monitor The King's every move and whereabouts? How could they difinitively say that I was wrong? Of course I could not difinitively say that I was right either. But Colonol Tom Parker was never one to turn down a crowd of potential ticket buyers. The King's 57 Chevy and Ferrari 0846 all in one car show. What a combo! "Logic and reason have left the building!"
June 29, 1970 Bill Rearden paid $ 16.500 for 250 LM S/N 5901. He got $ 12.000 back for his 330P S/N 0822. http://www.************.com/index.html?target=p_531.html&lang=en-us
It has no serial number and no papyrus trail, but you can still see the hull damage from when Noah was shooting the curl down the back side of Mt. Ararat. (He tried to repair the hull, but the head flew off his hammer!)
It's in the same photo album with Joseph Smith and the magic plates that is in the LDS Museum, only minutes from my home Unfortuantely, the LDS church won't let me scan the album. Tifosi 12: I rather trade it to Jim for 846
