This also gave me the chance to further restore this Serie Speciale to proper SS spec. It had stock 348 wheels in the back, but I've since sourced the proper SS wheels with the built in 25mm offset. They really fill the wheel wells nicely!

Very nice!! Those old tires must have rode like rocks and had noticeably less grip!

    Beautiful car...

How does a balancer mounted on a suspended surface take into account the movement of the surface for an accurate reading?

    Hi Jeff-

I work for Continental, so I approve of your choice in tires! Also very cool that mobile tire installation is something that exists - I had no idea!

Just curious, though - why didn't you go with the ExtremeContact Sport? It's a vastly superior performance tire when compared to the DWS06. I see that the 215 50/17 is not made in the ECS - does a 235 45/17 not fit in the front of the 348? The 235 is nominally smaller (3.5mm) in overall diameter than the 215, while being 20mm wider.
(although I imagine that this would have a detrimental effect on the manual steering at low speed)

    No.

More of a general question out there (I know there are a few curious engineering types here). I passed it around my team this morning, and it may or may not come down to the movement of the operator and the harmonic of the balancer and how it affects the system. Basically, movement of the balancing unit won't provide an accurate result (but HOW much inaccurate?). There's an oscillating mass (unbalanced tire) on a damped and undamped system, affected by the movement of the operator.

What I don't know is: Does the amount of unbalance in the tire/wheel affect the system enough to provide an inaccurate result, as well as the movement of the operator while the unit is in analysis mode (i.e. taking the measurement for the balance)

if the sprinter van was outriggered and leveled (like a motorhome), then the system is fine.

I don't think there is enough imbalance to be an issue with the van's movement. However, the balancer is calibrated with a wheel and known weight being spun. Question I would have is what does moving it around in a van do to balancer calibration? I have my own machines and typically do a couple sets of race tires at a time. I always recalibrate my fixed machine before I balance my tires. I think most balance issues owners complain about are user error by the tire monkey. There are setting to adjust for every wheel and tire before you balance. I never see those guys change the settings at the tire store. I change mine for the different wheel diameter and offset including where I plan to place my weights.

Oh and I like contis. I have DW's on my 550 and they are the best street tires I have used. There is a new conti extreme contact sport or something like that which is the new version of my tires that are getting rave reviews.

I love this idea of a mobile tire installer. Every time I go to a "tire shop" they always damage something. But your query and solution is mine as well.

I've used a mobile installer too. It's so nice! When I ordered tires from Tire Rack it was $20 postage per tire, OR they would only charge $10 if I had them sent to their preferred mobile installer. The installer charged $20 per tire to install, but if you consider the $10 saving in postage, it really only costs $10 per tire to install and it's so darn convenient!!
