    Judge,
I wish I had the means to buy your 308, OR your Mondial. I know you have kept them in very good condition. Alas, I am not in that position. Good luck to you, enjoy that which makes you happy.

If they don't sell in the mid term, I'll likely hang onto them, I'll just go from accumulating red Ferraris to white elephants.

I really do see a coming class war starting in the US, I really don't want to be a target. Of course, this will probably likely scare off potential buyers, but it is the way I feel...

    I see...

So this is as much about your feelings of.. let's call it a measure of insecurity... as much as it has to do with your "loss of passion", is that right?

    A "rejection of materialism"...

    Hmmm... that's an interesting thought.

What does "materialism" mean to you and why do you feel it is necessary for you to "reject" it? I'm a little intrigued.

And I'm still wondering why you mentioned "class warfare" and your desire not be a "target"? That's a statement rooted in insecurity, I think. Not picking on you or trying to make you seem vulnerable or anything, judge. A simple observation, that's all.

I don't think its personal insecurity in as much as Bernie pointed out, I've gone to some rough parts of the world where someone will not think twice of killing you in a robbery, even for $5.

My favorite memories of Japan are related to watching the sun come up while I was freezing my ass off at the peak of Mt. Fuji rather than the lights of Ginza. I definately prefer the unspoiled landscape of the African bush to suburban sprawl.

Its complicated, but then again, only a handful of things can really be explained as y = mx + b...

Wow this thread is a bit depressing...

Best of luck selling the cars- I'm sure they'll go to good homes.

My passion for cool cars is at an all a time high- as I'm sure it is for many of us on this and other auto related forums. I don't consider it materialism- I mean yeah- they are "things" that cost money- buying a Ferrari so you can impress people is one thing - owning a Ferrari because you really and truly love the car and the history and the uniqueness of the cars- that's another thing.

When my kids were born I was racing Alfas- and while I had to put off a few weekend races due to the burdens of paying for a young family, my passion never waned. Finances more than anything dictated my level of involvement in the "cool car hobby".

I can't imagine ever not being interested in cars... but hey, that's just me.

Yeah, I've been to Detroit, too ;-)

Turning serious, however... the desire to feel "secure" is a universal one.

I would argue that if there is any lesson history has to teach us it is that security--in all its forms--is an illusion. The world, in fact, is quite a dangerous place. And one doesn't have to travel to a faraway backwater on the other side of the earth to experience that danger first-hand.

So the more salient question is, How to deal with it?

I`m a little surprised as well, as I remember some garage thread not too long ago.

Sounds a bit like an inverse midlife crisis. Not necessarily a bad thing though.

Without knowing anything I`d say: Focus on the family and be happy!

Look, you sound like you need a change. Tell you what,
I'll take both off your hands for what you paid, and that way
you can have a nice, clean slate.

    Now, doesn't that sound nice?

Au contraire mon ami. This is the path that will one day have Eric say: "I get it!!!"

Eric hasn't turned his back on cars, after all, he is keeping the 365. He's simply adjusting the EQ knobs of life.

I love what I'm witnessing here!!

Best of luck to you! I've always enjoyed your posts.

My car enthusiasm waxes and wanes a bit too. I hadn't been driving my older cars much, and then this past summer my Audi was in the shop for a while, and I drove my 365GT everywhere. Even after the Audi came back, I kept on driving the 365-- and that really rekindled my enthusiasm for it.

Of course, eventually winter came (sort of) and the drop the kids off at school routine started, and I went back to the Audi-- but it was refreshing.

judge4re : I can understand what you mean when you say:

But, (and please don't take this the wrong way but), this is one of the saddest threads I have ever read!

Do you realize what you are saying? The bottom line is: You've grown up!

The little boy is no longer interested in playing with his toys!

"Ladies and Gentlemen!: Peter Pan has left the building!"

Of course Family (and friends), are far more important that any car at the end of the day, technically, even a one off Ferrari can be remade whereas your Favorite people cannot.

I have posted in the past that I am Rich!, not because of the money in My bank account, but because of My friends and Family, they make Me rich and I treasure them more than anything else.

However, I dread to even contemplate that there could possibly come a day when the passion, the magic and the mystique of Ferrari could evaporate out of My life!

I wish you well with your new found enlightenment (which is very spiritual BTW!), but I hope that one day you will re-find your passion for Ferrari and it will come to pass that you will realize that the passion for Ferrari is not necessarily about owning one (or several), it's about the way seeing and hearing the cars makes you feel. Some of the most passionate Ferrari fans in the world, are those that cannot even afford one!

I find vintage sports cars (Ferrari or otherwise) very spiritual, sort of an 'essence of the machine' thing, art and music combined in one object.

I've also grown to like the idea of owning less stuff, which is why at some point I decided that one special car was enough to indulge my interests.

I'd say judge is making the right move.

I have been noticing the same thing with my Ducati passion overthe last few years. Luckily I only have one bike and it doesn't take up much room in the garage. So I just leave it alone and get involved with something else, and go back when and if I'm ready. Come back when/if your ready and if not so be it.

I gave up on the Vintage thing a while back. One day I may go back but the concept that these things are over hyped for what they are can have some validity.

I'd like a 512 Boxer. I'm not sure I want to live with one anymore.

Are they art? Well, maybe from the 60's but the 80's just seem like poorly mass produced machines that rust, overheat, breakdown too much, and are uncomfortable to drive. So, are we having fun yet? :)

And, I'm not alone. How many new cars are sold every year vs old cars? There's a lot of people spending big bucks for new cars that they could get a fleet of some of the cars from the 80s'.
