Earlier this year while driving home in my first Ferrari, a silver on black F430, I got this sinking feeling. I was realizing that the F430 could not be my only car for various reasons. I needed to buy another car to supplement the Ferrari. So, I checked this forum for advice and found nothing good. I kept finding, "Well, I am going to keep my Scuderia because the 458 Italia is slower off the line and my wife likes the McLaren..." and "I commute to work in my Porsche GT2 and save my 599 and Lambo for the weekends." and "here is my red CS parked next to my red Scud."

Since MY wife has a "One Supercar" policy, and I have a "Try to Stay Married" policy, I derived the following test to determine the perfect companion car. I am posting it here in case anyone else is having the same issue I did.

The secret is to make the other car as different as possible, so the highest score is one where all the "yes" answers below are answered with "no" for the prospective companion car, and visa versa. I started with a few simple observations about the Ferrari to devise the following test.

Cutting to the chase, the perfect companion car for an F430 is a 1998 Honda Civic with 150k+ miles. I'll post a few pictures of the two next to each other in the garage if anyone is interested. Here is how the Honda scores on my F430 companion car matrix:

    1. Turn indicator is loader than engine: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    2. You want women to see you in it: F-car: Y, Civic: N
    3. You will haul open bags of s**t on the front seat: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    4. Gets 45 mpg: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    5. You get upset when neighbor backs into it (this happened!!...to the Honda): F-car: Y, Civic: N
    6. You wash it: F-car: Y, Civic: N
    7. Crowd gathers when you back out of the garage: F-car: Y, Civic: N
    8. Teenage girls laugh at you when you back out of the garage: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    9. Ok to use old t-shirt as a gas cap: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    10. Wiper blades are operated by reaching your hand out the window and manually actuating: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    11. Use of air conditioning reduces horsepower by 40%: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    12. Can be driven at its limits without fear of a speeding ticket: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    13. Frequently overtaken my mopeds: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    14. Can be driven another 100k miles with no reduction in resale value: F-car: N, Civic: Y
    15. You are really looking forward to the next 100k miles: F-car: Y, Civic: N

I hope this helps. Love this forum and the great advice. Thanks.

the trick is to sneak by a used 3-series on her with the "it's not much money but it's got a way better resale value over time" (as if...).

E46s are particularly tasty and fun to drive, yet can be had for a shockingly low amount of green.

My wife was out of town this weekend....so I traded in my 2007 Infiniti G35X for a red over ash (gray) 2007 SL55 w/ AMG Performance Package....now THAT is a nice companion to my red F430 sitting next to it. I supposed I could have traded in her 2005 Toyota Highlander instead, but she wasn't around to ask and it was at the airport, so......

Two very fast, very nice, yet completely different red cars sitting next to one another....yep, life doesn't suck.

She gets home tomorrow. She will look VERY GOOD in the right seat of the SL55 with the top down.

I have a Maserati Gransport and Lotus Elise as a companion to my 360, The Gransport is the daily driver and it's a truly wonderful car.. comfortable as a DD, fast as hell, and if you want fun sport mode will make the car a blast to drive.. Also sharing the Ferrari DNA you don't feel like you are not in your ferrari while in the maserati..

    it's great!
