How long do you drag out life? My cat has renal failure & I’ve been giving 100ml Ringers sub cu for a year. Now she is slipping away. She pees all over the house & hides under the bed all the time. The deed is at hand. It rips my soul apart to order the pink shot & feel her die in my arms. Next week. How do you deal?

I feel for you, it's one of the most difficult things you'll ever do.

A number of years ago I had to put my cat down. I asked the vet how I would know it was time and she told me "you'll know". She was right, though I couldn't handle staying with him while the deed was done. Also, my best pal Piper passed about 11 years ago. She was a Yorkiepoo and went everywhere with me; I still haven't gotten over losing her.

Time will heal your pain and the tears will subside, but the memories will remain. Take solace in knowing that what you're doing is right for your friend, she can't live a happy and pain free life in the condition she's in. If only we could be as compassionate with humans when there is no hope.

Karen, my prayers are with you and your cat. It will be hard on you, but you know it's best for her.

    With my condolences,
    Skip

Take some sort of solice in realizing your doing the right thing. My mom's dog Misty who is 18yr's old is a mess as her sight, hearing, smell and hip's have gone but mom take's her own personal comfort in knowing that Misty's heart is still very strong. My meaning is that if it comes down to the 'pink shot' hold your pet in your arm's giving them the love they know and hopefully that may be some sort of comfort for you and them. Damn I'm getting alittle shaken from just talking about this, we are here for ya man in whatever decision you make.

    Stay strong,
    Gregg

according to Buddhist beliefs regarding pets if you are worried they are suffering so much you should try to make them as comfortable as possible and if the medicine is just lengthening the suffering then you may remove the medicine and allow them to let go of life on their own

It is very difficult and I have not had to make that choice yet, I had a few pets die but they have all died peacefully

The problem w the shot is that it brings you bad karma on the other hand watching them suffer is also awful so that decision is up to you

I have Whippets...well have a Whippet now... We have had to put 3 of them down over the last 8 years and every time it just BREAKS MY HEART! The last one was this January... I still cry for the loss of each of them from time to time. They were/are my babies and I miss them dearly. The last two made it quite clear that they were done. I fear the last one we might have kept around a bit to long. She had been having little strokes that were becoming more frequent... She was 16. 3 years ago we lost our show champion...like your cat she had renal failure. I had not thought of it at the time but if I had it to do over again, I would have checked into a vet school to see about a renal transplant...other than her kidney problems and slight cataracts she was in GREAT shape!

You can see my babies here:

I feel for you! Good luck w/ your decision.

    Karen,

About six months ago, my cat Beebs was diagnosed with Feline HIV. She was 8 ... which is when the disease activates.

I had her put down when it was obvious to me that her quality of life was miserable... I could tell... and you will, too...

It was hard... one of the hardest things I've ever done... but necessary...

She's in a better place now....

    Be strong....

We had to make this call with our dog several years ago. It was heart rending since he had been with us for 14 years and was a real part of the family. The vet was a woman and she saw how upset we were about having to put him down. About a week later we received this poem from the vet. It eased some our grief. Open the link and read it. I hope it helps you like it did us.

Someone sent me this once, its very beautiful

    Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I think you should be very careful not to deprive your self or your pet the closeness of its final minutes. When I had to put Gable down (see my avitar) as the shot took effect, I could see him relaxing and feeling pain free for the first time in a long while. He died quietly in my arms, and his last glance looking into my eyes I knew he approved. It was a painful day, but saying goodby to your companion and being there for them at the last moment is priceless.

That is what we did w/ all our babies too. The vet will admin the shot monitor for the heart and breathing to stop and set out and let you cry till you knock on the door to let them know you are done, we usually leave via the back door after that... no sense upsetting the others waiting... I usually bury my face in their neck and cry like the big baby that I am...they are family and it is hard to let them go...

Our dog Pooter (Poodle/Terrier mix) laid on the table and was actually wagging his tail. He could no longer stand up without assistance, his eyesight was gone and he had kidney failure. I stood at the head of the table and he held his head up and looked in my way like he used to. I held his head in my hands and my wife stood by holding his right paw like she did when he shook hands with us and gently stroked his ears with her other hand. (Now I am starting to blubber all over the computer, dang it). We both spoke soft words of encouragement and love into him. He laid there and listened like he did when we all laid on the floor together. The vet administered the shot and it took effect quicker than I expected. He totally relaxed, let out a soft sigh and just laid down and was gone. The vet let my wife and I have some private time and we also left out the back way, totally cried out. But, he was pain free and totally resting. It was the best thing to do. Do we miss him, of course we do. But the things we remember in our hearts are the things that bring us joy about him.

Be there for your cat and speak your heart to her. Somehow she will know how much you love her. And cry if you feel the need. It is only natural and fully expected.

About 5 years ago, my cat Calliope became very ill with an intestinal growth that was making it impossible for her to digest food. The doctor told me that the longer she stayed alive, the more she would suffer and would wither away. As much as I loved her and putting her to rest was going to create a huge void in my life, I knew she loved me and the right thing to do was to ease her pain. I drove to the veterinarian with Calliope sitting in a box on my mom's lap, and despite her suffering, she enjoyed the last hour of her life with me knowing only the love that I had for her. The doctor administered the shot as I held her and she slowly closed her eyes. I cried for hours after we put her to rest, and I dug a grave for her on our property underneath a tree and wrapped her in a t-shirt of mine to sleep in since she always liked to curl up on any worn shirt I might have left on the bed or a chair. My mom and I still pay her visits.

Remember the love for your cat, and when the grieving is over, there are lots of pets out there looking for a loving home. Share that love with another animal when the time is right. After about 3 months, I decided to go to the animal shelter on a Saturday to find a kitten to share my house with, and I found a wonderful little girl, my cat Daphne, who has been by my side since then.

The only thing worse than keeping an animal suffering for selfish reasons is seeking attention for doing it!

I'd say put her down, but DO NOT hold her when they do it.

My dad held one of our cats when they were put to sleep, and he regrets it.

Come on Lamont, are you a heartless d**k? Venusone only asked how to deal with it. You may be trying to make light of the situation but at this time your type of "lightheartedness" is out of place. If you cannot add something to the discussion that is not disturbing maybe you should sit this one out.

In most cases I do not question your input but this time it may be out of place.

This is the ultimate moment we always dread as pet owners. As far as holding them, that's a personal decision. I'll never forget a moment from the day I had to put my first Golden Retriever out of her pain. She was with me for 16 wonderful years, from the age of 13 to 29. She had been such a big part of my life and given so much, I felt that the very least I owed her in those final moments inside the sterile confines of a veterinary office was the comfort of my presence, in my arms for the last time. This was how our life together began when I picked her out from the litter, and I'll always be glad I chose to be there for her at the very end.

    Ditto +1000000; and CMY too!!!!

You two guys have lost all respect I might have had for you. You're heartless, unfeeling, and now very disturbing. How could you post such crass remarks to someone who is grieving.

Lamour and CMY....GO TO HELL; you ignorant BASTARDS!!!!

Please Karen, don't take the comments of these two Morons to heart.

Hey, I thought it was pretty funny. :D

Karen posts a lot of emotionally-based topics but doesn't follow through with any substance. I understand that she walks on water due to ownership of a 328 (which she bought from the proceeds of her dead father's estate) but I don't take most of it seriously. Sue me.

I've lost many pets but you won't see me looking for hugs. Suck it up and move on!
