He's a very private guy but known to a few of us.

This deal has been in the works since March.

    Why is he selling?

I'm always curious when I hear about things like this. It seems like it would have taken a lot of energy and passion to put this collection together (obviously money as well, but that's easier if you have it)-- did he move on to other interests? Has an even larger collection, and is just pruning (although if that's the case, then the larger collection must really be something!)? Needs the money? Too old (or health issues) to have fun with the cars any more?

My brother has a lot of cars, by my standard (15-20), and while he has no intention of selling, he does complain that with a lot of cars, "they end up owning you." Maybe that is a factor?

    buy low, sell high?

if I had a collection like this I'd be tempted to cash in and ride it our for a bit until the market corrects, then start a new collection (or buy back my old cars ;))

If you are looking at it purely as an investment, then that makes total sense. Although, you may not be able to buy back some of those cars at a later date-- some pretty rare cars in there. The pope's Enzo isn't something you can pick up at any old auction...

I suppose I get more attached to things than most people. The idea of selling something that I sweated over, had experiences with, and really was a part of my life, just so I can get a financial return isn't something that makes sense to me.

Now, on the other hand, I've had cars that were basically meh, and I had no problem selling those. Even some cars, by my standard, which were fairly special, at least in theory.

The Pope's Enzo is a pretty tracable car.

It actually has the entire assembly line's signatures under the hood.

I recall a chatter posting, about driving it up North.

    Is he a member here?

From the looks of his collection on the internet, it appears that he's just pruning a bit... Maybe selling some of the high value stuff so he can concentrate on what he really loves, which I can totally understand.

RM auctions is selling one of the most amazing car collections ever assembled on the planet.
View Lots | Classic Car Auctions | RM Sotheby's

This collection includes the Enzo gifted to the pope and a McLaren F1. Will probably bring in over $65 million.
The owner wishes to remain anonymous.

So obviously the question is: Who is this guy who's been able to assemble such a remarkable collection? It's remarkable that he has been able to maintain such a low profile.

Why does he wish to remain anonymous?

And maybe most importantly: why is he selling?

    And the threads keep coming.

The original thread is still here in the Vintage forum: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vintage-ferrari-market/489433-250-lm-6105-many-others.html

I'm leaving this one in GFD because not all cars involved are "vintage", and there's another in a subscribed forum, which can't be merged with either of these.

Wayne, I put the over/under on the number of new threads on this between now and the auction at 5 1/2 which means that you're going to have a fair amount of work. :)
