I ordered a sandwich yesterday morning at a deli in New Jersey to enjoy later in the day. I repeated my order two and a half times to the young woman behind the counter. "Turkey, swiss, lettuce, tomato and a little mayo and mustard. On whole wheat." She replied, "Do you want cheese?" Yeah, Turkey and swiss. Lettuce and tomato. With a little mayo and mustard. On whole wheat." Another question from the girl, "Did you say mayo?" I replied, not really thinking anything of this as she was using a some new age POS software/hardware solution seemingly entering every aspect of my order into it as I spoke, "Yeah, just a little. Thanks."

Fast forward to later in the day. This sandwich is typically my go to. Sometimes, honey mustard, sometimes just mayo, sometimes just mustard. You get the idea. I feel that it's healthy enough and light enough that I don't need a nap afterwards. It's my sandwich. In any event, I sit down and unwrap this bad boy to find a poppy kaiser roll. To say my heart sunk is a bit dramatic but I was bummed. I was pretty damn hungry too as it was late at that point and this was basically my dinner. All I was thinking was how lucky I was to get a little thing of macaroni salad as my last request from the young lady at the deli and that there was a vending machine with some lays chips around the corner. Which shouldn't of necessarily been an after thought but the deli only had giant bags of chips and knowing myself I would of eaten the whole bag regardless of what the sandwich looked like.

Back to this sandwich. I must of stared at this thing for a solid 45 seconds before biting into it. Analyzing it. Questioning whether or not I was going to be bent out of shape after eating it and if I was going to make it the next 3 hours before I got home and had a glass of whiskey and cried myself to sleep. Looking at the sandwich from the bottom, in this order, I saw cheese, turkey, lettuce, tomato and then the mayo and mustard. It was so odd to me. But of course I ate it...

When I build a sandwich the lettuce ALWAYS goes on the bottom. It's not necessarily the right way but it's just how I've done it and how I gotten sandwiches when I order in New York for as long as I can remember. Then we have the meat or protein then the cheese followed by the tomato and the dressing. Up until yesterday I whole heartedly thought this was a common understanding. Yeah - some are better than others but generally a cold cut sandwich, since I can remember, has 9 times out of 10, been put together that way. Don't get me wrong, the sandwich was good. Just different.

So I supposed the purpose of this thread is to figure out what a normal sandwich is supposed to look like and how you guys construct your favorite...

    I'm hungry.

I think you and I are almost the same. I'm honestly surprised if anything I specifically request gets done as ordered. And when it's not, it's catastrophic for a short while. As for sammiches (because I grew up in Missourah), from bottom up it should be meat, cheese, veggies (lettuce forms a bed for the tomatoes and whatnot), condiments spread on the underside of the top bun. Every burger and sammich joint I've ever been to has the lettuce/veggies above the meat.

    I'm hungry, too. :(

When I build a sandwich I know I'm not going to eat for a few hours I always put a slice of cheese against both sides of the bread/bun. Whatever else goes in between, including any sauce/condiment. It can ooze a little bit on first bite, but since the bread/bun had not absorbed any liquids it doesn't get soggy.

Lettuce: On top is the way I always did it. Jersey Mike too!

It must be a Jersey thing. I’ve never seen anything like this. I’m holding this upside down I’m assuming..? Same deli, slight variation of the sandwich...

Your ordeal is a top reason that I don't really like to dine out, especially at fast food places. My favorite sammich is a Subway veggie with all the extra toppings except olives. I have maybe 2 per year...T

If you're gonna eat a fast food sub, ditch Subway and go to Jersey Mike's. Subway is the Walmart of sub shops.

LOL. McDonalds perhaps. You know what you're gonna get. Good or bad! [emoji4] I like Jersey Mike's. I think that's the one with that red pepper relish. [emoji39][emoji39]
