    Hi all,

I finally got round to getting my belts done. Just for info the old belts were 10 years old, had 6000kms on them and they were in perfect condition. The tensioners also had zero issues. The car is also kept in a non-air conditioned garage in Dubai so it does get hot in there in the summers. So this has been my experience with belts.

While everything is apart and seeing as we had a sticking caliper and a couple of bushes showing some cracks. I decided to have all the metal parts including the frame being blasted and sent for powered coating, all new bushes, seals, calipers being rebuilt, new brake lines, master cylinder, fuel lines, new injectors and seals etc and some other work to make sure the old girl is in top mechanical condition.

It's already just had all new fuel accumulators, filters and pressure regulators and vacuum hoses.

The cars underside and other components are getting a dry ice clean.

I think I'm also going to have to clean and regrease the window motors etc. This was the first time I've seen them extremely slow.

So all going well there will be years of fun and a lot more miles on it this year.

    Good day Craig,

Although visual inspection of the belts and other rubber based items (like tires, etc), can provide some insight to their condition it is not 100% accurate to the true condition of the item. Rubber based items constantly "cure" and so various components used in the rubber release over time which can affect the item's integrity. A great example are tires... where after 7-10 years (depends on environmental factors), the tires can become physically hard and/or create microscopic (and at times visual) cracking which can cause the tire to fail under normal driving condition. My point is that it is unwise to rely solely on a visual inspection to rubber bits, as there are other factors/processes that are occurring that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

    Cheers,

    Sam

when you see the belts, also feel them and bend them then you mostly know the condition. with tires you can not do this.

I hate fixing engines for free. My own TR and 328 get them every 5 years. I have seen too many belt failures to be stupid about it.
