I remember hearing or reading a while back that Rory Burne had a protege he was was working with to design the Ferrari F1 cars and eventually pass the torch to.

I've had the feeling all season that the reason for Ferrari's underperforming F1 2005 car is because Rory took a supporting role rather than a lead role in the design of this seasons car.

I haven't heard anyone talk about this and was wondering if anyone else has any thoughts on this subject?

Rory plus tire's sure put a damper on their season.I would love to see them make a comeback in 06 but the way they finished 05 season I highly doubt they will beat Renault or Mclaren next year.

Dude, next year, tire change is back, everyone starts from scratch with the V8 engine, and 2 other teams will have bridgestone tires to continue testing.

I think 06 they will fight back to the top, will take the entire season though, I doubt they will run away with like yrs past.

    You're thinking of Aldo Costa.

I still believe it was mainly a tyre-issue. Ferrari and Bridgestone went for short term succes by working very closely together in creating a tyre with a sole purpose, namely bringing Ferrari the championship. And they have done so. 7 consecutive manufacturer titles. Where as Michelin had to devide it's attention over a number of teams. In the long run, Michelin however, draws the bigger straw, since they have obtained much more data than Bridgestone ever has with Ferrari, Minardi and Jordan. Slowly, they were gaining ground and by the 2005 season, the roles were reversed.

Therefor it was much easier for the Michelin-teams, since they were ahead of Bridgestone in the first place, to agree on a self-imposed testing ban. I've always fully understood Ferrari and Bridgestone for not taking part in this agreement. They simply couldn't afford to do so.

Not that it would or could ever happen but I always thought it would be interesting to have a comparison point between the Michelins and Bridgestone tires. Again, not that it could happen but in a dream world it would be great if Ferrari could test some Michelin tires under full race conditions to see the results. I'm sure the lack of competitiveness was a result of a number of factors but it certainly seems like the tires played a significant part in the equation this year.

Ferrari will be back to their fighting form next year with the knockout style qualifying session and the tire change rule in effect. McLaren won't have the quickest car next year either.

Is the tyre change rule back, it said today they were just thinking about it, also BAR are running Bridgestones next year. Plus its a clean slate for everyone with the V8 so I see Ferrari and Michael getting back to form, I do hope so. Would love to see Michael bow out after making it 8:D

I've heard mention of that fact (Rory's apprentice) but I really hasn't been discussed at any great length. I have to agree, the car was a dog. F1 is still about the total package however, and they didn't seem to have anything right this year, except maybe for the power.

As for their thrid in the WCC, Bob Varsha made a very sobering point-- Their margin over Toyota in the final standings was very much due to the 18 points they received in Indy.

I really hope they get their act together next year, it is not the same without a Ferrari in the fight.

A quote yesterday from Todt sums up the F2005 package pretty well:
