I have begun to look for a 2005-2006 F430 Berlinetta (having previously owned a 1989 328GTB, and a 1995 F355 Berlinetta, I am thus infected with "The Disease", which is incurable I gather).

Living in Southern California, I am finding many, many cars for sale. Many of those in the custody of dealers. Asking prices are somewhat consistent among those dealers.

What I am trying to determine is what sort of mark-up these dealers have added to the price they paid for the car.

If a car is listed for $120K, did the dealer pay $105K for the car? $95K?

I am the sort of buyer who does a lot of research before a purchase, so I like to know the parameters of "both sides" of the deal.

Does anyone have any cogent thoughts on this as I set the cat among the pigeons?

Use cars.com and sort for your desired car. There is a lot of data out there unless you want a gated manual. If that's your next car you will have to pay whatever they are asking and be quick about it before it's gone.

Great advice. Autotrader.com is a good source too.

Basically, what is information on dealer margins/markups?

From my experience with my F430 and Scud about a year ago, it was about $10-15k minimum for an authorized dealer, and $7-10k minimum for a nonauthorized. Authorized dealers on the East Coast (New England & NY) mark up was $15-20k minimum.

If you're looking for a deal, you don't have as much room as you think. Regardless of the markup, realistically, the maximum you'll probably get off list is $3-5k given that a dealer has to pay for overhead and make a profit. Experiences will of course vary.

For example, F of BH offered $117 for my F430 that were being listed around $130-132 on the market. Non authorized offered me up to $123. I sold for around $128 on my own.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I am really looking for the right car and feel best about a deal the more I know what's happening on the other side of the desk.

In reality, I want both the dealership and me to be happy about the transaction. I tend to have loyalty to those who are professional in their dealing and typically buy more vehicles from them.
