100% sure - the 250 GTO. best looking and most sucessfull Ferrari ever. but i never had the chance to ride one. riding the 288 GTO was fun, but i dont like the characteristics of the turbo-engines. so - where are the 250 GTO owners ? let me try the car to be absolutely sure.
What about the Pontiac GTO? The original car in the 60s did 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds and looked great to boot!
I would love to see them compete on a track. The 250 would be a lot more tossable but may not be as balanced. Which would be quicker 50-150? Which stops better? I would hope the 288 would be the winner being the newer car, but one never knows! Ken
That's a tough call, both cars are coveted. Can I say "both" ? Though it is an American great, it's named was taken from Ferrari. That caused quite a spat back then and may cause a stir here! Look at the ultra RARE Ferrari GTO 64s... only three made, but it's very clear where Corvette received their inspiration when you put those two cars side by side. In summary, The Americans copied Ferrari's originality an added it to their sports cars.
I like the way you think. I can't believe it took two pages before someone gave the correct answer I love the looks of both cars, probably my two favorite Ferraris of all time. If I absolutely had to choose, it would have to be the 250 though. Still one of the most beautiful cars ever made!
Sounds like you're further away from ownership than you think. That says $6+ million," not "$1.6 million."
i voted 288, as i'd like reasonable performance when compared to todays sports-cars, still i could very easily change my mind, that 250 is awfully tempting & everyone knows what it is, and well damm it is rare as hell!!
I wonder if it's a generational thang... the 288 was the Ferrari that started it all for me as an impressionable youth (I was in high school when it came out). I have always associated that shape with the marque, and though I think the 250 is one of the most beautiful classics ever, the 288 is THE Ferrari for me.
Call me the practical one. According to manheim.com, the value of the 250 is $14MIL and the 288 $300K. So I'd go for the 250, sell it, buy the 288 and bank the $13.7MIL. If I already had $24MIL in the bank, I'd opt for the 250.
The 288 GTO is the THE FERRARI that started my obsession, that being said it is no comparison to a 250 GTO the most successful GT racer Ferrari ever made, plus it is a V12 and what a V12 the final evolution of the 3 liter Columbo designed V12, a real significant and treasured piece of automotive history and one of the sexiest shapes ever to be created out of metal. Although if I could sell it for market value (6+ million). then I would keep it for a year and enjoy the feeling of owning such a special piece of history and drive it to events that would never see such an animal and after the year of fun I would sell it and buy a garage full of my Favorite Ferraris starting with a 288 GTO, 512 BBi, 330 GT 2+2, 275 4-cam, 456GT, 512TR.... and still have a few million for a nice garage and to restore my existing 308 to better than new.
