I know it (be somebody...are somebody) was discussed at some length recently, but was a verifiable quality source of the quotation ever cited?

Sorry if I'm repetitious, I have searched but this answer eludes me.

    TIA

Yes, I know the quotation ...but was a verifiable quality source of the quotation ever cited?

Or is this merely more self-aggrandizing apocrypha?

Even if true, you would kind of have to consider the source. Even if he did once own a Miura.

I distinctly remember Sinatra doing printed magazine ad endorsements for that 1981 to 1983 Chrysler Imperial coupe with the weird cutoff line behind the rear wheels.

He actually said this - about the instrument panel (in praise of it's simplicity) - "what do I want to know? I want to know how fast I am going and how much gas I have got. That's all".

I guess I would take Steve McQueen or James Coburn on good taste in cars over Frank...but certainly not in his basic skill set of music, whisky, and women.

Different twist, but , reminds me of similar one...."You wear a Rolex if you wish for people to know that you have a lot of money, and you wear a Patek Filip if you DON'T wish people to know how much you have"

The new ones are reported to have six.

BTW - they could have a point about the Firebird and bad taste - I heard that Burt Reynolds had one too, and that Loni Anderson left him because of it.

But they offer zero in the way of proof. I prefer about 80.

Or this - for a money saving alternative...

    Frank Sinatra's Chrysler for sale
    16 January 2007

    by Adrian Hearn
The last car to be driven by American music and film legend Frank Sinatra is for sale on Auto Trader.

Sinatra’s 1985 automatic Chrysler LeBaron was a gift from wife Barbara.

Ol’ Blue Eyes owned the motor until 1991 when he gave up driving.

Powered by a 2.2-litre engine, the LeBaron produces 146bhp and 168 lb/ft of pulling power.

The fully-loaded model boasts a leather interior, all-round electric windows, cruise control and has covered 77,777 miles.

Sinatra – whose hits include Come Fly With Me and New York, New York - sold more than 250 million records over a career spanning seven decades.

The New Jersey-born performer died in California in 1998 at the age of 82.

The Mafia-linked star’s cars have fetched large amounts in the past with a 1970 Lamborghini Miura going under the hammer for £150,000 in 2003.

Now you can get your hands on Sinatra’s Chrysler for £20,000.

Agreed. And let us not forget the famous 57 supercharged TBird. But the reality seems to be that this guy really could have cared less about his cars in general.

The "enthusiast" types may very well have been just stage props for his successful show-biz career.

Here is a little more on the 81-83 "Frank Sinatra Edition" Chrysler Imperial that I remembered the dashboard quote from:
    __

Competing models such as the Cadillac Eldorado and the Lincoln Continental Mark VI had been downsized by 1981, so the Imperial was about the right size for its intended market, and the market was certainly there, since the Eldorado was at that time rising to the peak of its success. Considerable marketing was put behind the new model as well, including commercials and magazine ads featuring singer Frank Sinatra, a personal friend of Iacocca. For 1981 and 1982, in fact, Sinatra editions were offered with special blue paint and emblems. This special edition included a set of 16 cassette tapes by the legendary crooner.

Nevertheless, the car did not take off. Other than its troublesome fuel injection system, it offered no technological advances, and the company's reputation for quality was still suffering from the disasters of the 1970s. Dealers often replaced the fuel injection system with carburetors. The rear styling, which had an odd, bustle-backed look vaguely similar to Cadillac's controversial 1980 Seville, was a styling hindrance. Competition from the much cheaper and mechanically similar Cordoba, which was sold in the same showrooms, could have been a factor as well.

    Nor would I.

The dearth of references speaks louder than the alleged quotation itself.
