Well John I had one of those Damiler's back in 1970 and I really dug the shape then. Fiberglass body and all it's faults. I never thought of it as ugly at the time. But now I'm thinking "What was I thinking?????? It is a tad ugly.

Those are really FUGLY cars. But some accountant at the manufacturers headquarters sat around the board table and said "lets build this, it looks great".

Oh, no. I love this car. It has some awkwardness but overall it's very attractive.

That isn't even the worst of them. If you really want some trauma, look at the first model year Aztec. It turned the term "gray body cladding" into a punchline.

Don't have pics, but plenty of cars have been hit with the ugly stick in the last 10-20 years:
    Isuzu VehiCross
    Chevrolet Avalanche
the G-Whiz (look up the TopGear clip)
    the last-gen Chrysler Sebring
any Pontiac from the early 1990s through the early 2000s except for the Firebird
the Nissan Murano convertible (forgot the official name)
    Audi A1
    BMW 5-series GT
    Honda Crosstour
    Mosler Raptor
    Nissan Juke
    Toyota Yaris
most anything Korean made before the mid-2000s

The most jarring styling trends these days IHMO are:
-blunt-nosed European luxury cars, caused mostly by EU pedestrian safety regs. The new BMWs in particular have really big schozzes
-excessive use of gray trim to cars look sporting
-multi-layered digital dashboards (see Honda Civic)
-attemps to make crossovers look performance-oriented and truckish at the same time (see BMW X6, 5-series GT, Crosstour, et. al.)
-compact eco-bubbles (apparently an egg on four wheels makes people feel green)
-flat medium gray paint (not attractive on most cars IMHO)
-excessively large headlights (case study #1: new M-B SL; most manufacturers are using too much surface for headlights though)

That's the modern version of the legendary multipla. No doubt the old version was beautiful but this one is quite particular.

I can tell you it's a successful vehicle and sold well because it's a very comfortable ride and the huge windows all around is great for anyone who gets claustrophobic in the typical small euro car.

In it's time, it was a space shuttle. I still think it's an amazing car. It's not pretty but it was one of the most creative cars ever.
