F-Chatter and friend "Bertrand 328" has just sent me this (Thanks Bertrand...):

    Chassis number # 71241

    https://www.graypaulclassiccars.com/vehicles/ferrari-328-gtb-87/

The description says that: "It was also ordered from new, and delivered as such with a Nero lower half echoing the two tone colouring of the Boxer series, the only 328 I have ever seen in such a combination, but has later been reverted back to being the Rosso Corsa we're all familiar with."

Alas, alas, alas: it is not in "Boxer paint scheme" anymore! It would have been the first and only 328 GTB that I am aware of in that scheme!

    Comments anyone?

I had found (and nearly purchased) a 328 GTS back in 2013 with that paint scheme. Was said to be 1 of 12 from the factory in that color. Not sure if it was 12 for GTS alone or all 328s. Either way, I do like the look.

Yes, GTSs in "Boxer paint scheme" are known: F-Chatter Duane on the forum had one...but a GTB? This is the first time I heard of one...

I think that suits the car beautifully. Arguably better on a GTB and I feel it looks more coherent on a 328 than on a 308. It's a shame you can't paint yours like that. BTW the car is very close to me so I could go have a look. Would the boxer scheme have had a black rear aerofoil?

Can someone please explain to me what is going on with the radiator cap?

I am pretty sure the 12 is for Boxer trim for 328's with USA delivery. I never saw any figures for GTS/GTB split but based on how rare the option was and also the rarity of GTB's in the USA, I would be surprised if any GTB's were delivered here in the paint scheme. This of course is speculation on my part.

I'd wager that it had something to do with some safety regulation at the time (a potentially "hot" radiator cap had to be coloured orange for safety?). Since the car was delivered at the factory maybe it had to meet the prevailing Italian laws? Just a guess, but it would be interesting to decode the VIN to see what was its assigned "market".

Steve, getting a bit lazy, or probably too much work, so short of time?

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, photography of the VIN plate says: ZFFWA19C000071241:

Meaning: the "W" in fourth place = euro engine, non-catalysed. The "C" in eigth place: Right Hand Drive, UK market car.

I know one of the sales people there and can ask for you. I'll go and take a look when it arrives; it is less than 5 km from me. Anything else you want to know, Bertrand?

    Thanks in advance

All I can say is too bad it was changed. :(

Not difficult to change back, just spray over the red. :)

The black on the "Boxer" 328's was painted in the satin sheen like on the Boxer, not glossy, right?

When I was looking at this car, I wasn't sure if it was the factory paint. It was nearly 4 years ago, but if my memory serves me, I reached out to my local Ferrari Dealer who gave me the number.

This discussion was on the 328.
    (I have a yellow/Boxer 308GTB, also)

    Nerofer,

As posted we had a member with one in Florida, and if I am not mistaken a 328GTB Boxer Trim was recently on auction, at the COTA in Austin?

There certainly are not "many" of course, as the phase out of 512BBi production in 1984, made it rather a historic choice, for a late 328.

My #22127 is getting some repairs that may be extensive enough for a full respray, but I think my Boxer trim will remain. I have a photo from a very early owner, that shows it next to a matching GT4, with yellow/Boxer trim. And a vintage yellow plane, to match!

Once "Old School", always "old School" I suppose.....

It's gloss black with a flattening agent added....yes, satin.

I always describe it as a friend once told me:
"You can see the reflections of the highway stripes, as you go down the road"..

    So, not flat, certainly.

    Hi Alan,

As far as I know, those cars you are alluding to were GTSs, not GTBs; to the best of my knowledge, the one in the link is the first, and only, known 328 GTB in factory "Boxer paint" scheme. Too bad she doesn't sport it these days...

And, of course, please keep 22127 in "boxer" scheme!

Is it close to the satin finish on the louvres or glossier?

Similar. Louvers are anodized and the Boxer trim is satin paint. The louvers are "grippier" so if you get a little wax on them, residue is stuck in there until you remove it. The satin black on the Boxer trim can be waxed with no residue.
