How they think they can get away with this is just revolting to me. This is the list of what is prohibited at the track. The following items will not be permitted inside the gates of the circuit. In addition to items specifically listed here, other items that may be deemed to present a potential hindrance or threat may also be prohibited.  Alcoholic Beverages  Animals (exception for certified service animals)  Bags or parcels larger than 12X12X20 inches  Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, skates, segways, golf carts or other unauthorized means of transportation  Coolers, thermoses or ice chests  Distribution of unauthorized promotional or commercial material  Food and Beverage (Note: sealed, individual, plastic bottles of water are allowed)  Fireworks, explosives or other incendiary devices  Glass or metal containers of any style  Illegal substances  Items that may be deemed a safety hazard or annoyance to participants or guests (balls, Frisbees, balloons, projectiles, horns, radios, bells, whistles, musical instruments, laser pointers, etc.)  Large, golf-type umbrellas  Non-collapsible chairs  Tents or canopies  Video cameras, still cameras with lenses exceeding 10 inches in length or detachable lenses of any kind, audio recording devices and tripods; no video recording will be allowed  Weapons of any kind, including guns, knives, pepper spray, handcuffs, nightsticks or other items How do they get the nerve to say that no video recording, dslr, any lens with a 10" or larger length, or any other kind of recording equipment will be allowed. Check out this crap for yourselves. http://6bd32fe3d0a84caa1d3b-e077574ebbd2dc508f26c12c8cc8fefb.r63.cf1.rackcdn.com/5065a2a141c3cCOTA-F1USGP-ProhibitedItems(9.28.12).pdf I would never attend a race that banned all of that. Canada was great and let me bring this in with no trouble. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The worst insult is no detachable lenses. That is crazy. I can understand if you are in a grandstand, that a lense more then 10" could annoy the person in front of you. The video camera edict is probably a Bernie rule everywhere. And I have to buy their race track food? That is true arrogance. The rest of the banned items are nothing new. So what fixed lense camera has a lense that is 9.75" long? And I just noticed no handcuffs, the wife will not like that.
I bring bigger lenses (yeah, size matters! ) to GPs around the world. Nobody ever had an issue with that. Not even Indy right after 9/11 when everybody was nervous. They looked at my bag, saw the monster lens (a rental) and waived me right through. COTA is a bunch of arrogant idiots.
Yeah most of the items make sense but all of the camera/recording stuff is just completely nuts and insulting.
It most likely is. Read the fine print of a F1 ticket and pretty much any kind of recording is prohibited. The bigger question is: Will anybody enforce this nonsense? So far at no other GP they ever have. That's what I want to know too. Plus shutter speeds etc.
I'd be even more pissed if I had a rental and couldn't use it for what I rented it for. Almost happened to me when I was photographing my school's football team playing in the state championship game in Giant's Stadium. I had a press pass waiting for me inside the stadium but they wouldn't let me in with my monopod for the 400 f/2.8L I rented without the press pass and they told me that I wouldn't be allowed back in to get it after I got the pass. Luckily someone was able to pass me it through the gate to the field once I got down on there. Certainly would have sucked trying to hand hold a 400 f/2.8 for so long.
No Animals! I'm out!!! Was going to bring a llama to ride around the grounds..... Most is the items on the list are pretty standard for a major sporting event; the camera ban is a huge problem though
Canada was so much more open to just about anything. Coolers full of beer, my 500mm f/4.0 lens and monopod and the huge backpack it resides in, food, drink, chairs. Some of the stuff I was a little surprised they let in but it didn't cause any problems that I saw. There are going to be TONS of pissed off people who are going to show up with DSLR and get turned away at the gates.
For all those saying "just say no".... nice try, but what's a person to do if they've already paid for the weekend. This 'no DSLR' thing is total crap.
...all due respect, do you go out to many other sports venues in the US? The list is pretty standard stuff and wouldn't be surprised if NJ will be the same (if it ever happens!!)...BTW, if you want to go the Jerry's world you even have to mind your language http://stadium.dallascowboys.com/guests/guestInfo.cfm
Was very impressed when I went to Silverstone this year and they let us bring in snacks, food, water, beer, etc.
I don't condone COTA restriction - but they are pretty much turning over the keys to the track to Bernie for the weekend. The only direct revenue is tickets and foods (no advertising), so not really surprising that they are going to force everyone to buy their crap, and with our litigious society anything that could disrupt other attendees gets the axe... though I kinda agree with them on a few of those items... explosives, fireworks, guns, knives, drugs - not sure those are really necessary at the track LOL!
This: Except, I suspect vasoline will also be banned! *Supposedly*, they're sold out, so you should be able to sell your tix for a handsome profit! Yeah, right! Cheers, Ian PS - While it probably does state this BS in the small print, I too have never had any problems bringing beer, food etc into a race track. How about those attending shoot *masses* of video on their phones - Then "we" can stitch it all together and post it *everywhere* under multiple names / genres etc - Given enough folk doing it, not even the Pygmy could win the battle!
Just go buy a superzoom at the nearest Walmart or Costco and take it back after the weekend. I currently use a Panasonic FZ40 and while low light performance is nowhere near a DSLR, in daylight it does very well. The 24x zoom is also quite handy.
I would expect the TSA to be groping and frisking at the gates. Stacking up all the banned items and having thier pick of the goodies by days end. You may even run into check points on the interstate. I hope the TSA doesn't show up, but Texas seems to be a test bed for the Police State USA. (www.infowars.com)
Worthless to me, can't get shots anything like this with any point and shoot. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is almost a P&R topic. The extensive disclaimers and prohibitions reminds me of a quote attributed to Bernie: "The problem with the US is that if you say good-morning to someone over there and it happens to be 12:15, you've got yourself a lawsuit."
