While interesting, it hardly compares to a 348, risk-wise. Shoot, you could probably buy 2 or 3 of those Audis for the price of one 348 cambelt failure repair. :)

I agree, just know how this forum loves looking at timing belts. He paid 7 grand for his 2 or 3 years ago. His commuter.

Now you got me confused. Who is on vacation? The owner, the mechanic or the engine?

I had the belt break in my Honda at 85k miles... It was "only" a Honda, but still an expense.

On the flip side, my Austrian military truck (a Pinzgauer) uses timing gears, which are pretty damn cool. Air cooled, carb'd, timing gears, 4-cyl -- the only thing more basic would be a lawnmower!

My Honda push mower has a timing belt (seriously) and its internal so it's running in oil and you can't replace it without splitting the case!

Bernadette is right and they probably forgot the bolt that holds the shoe on top of the belt.
So I guess we know what happened. Shoe came loose dropped on lower end and snapped the belt.
    End of story....mechanic error!

Very well spotted. When Bernadette mentioned this, I tried to find it on the pictures but couldn't see it. Clearly, the shoe is missing. I guess the the owner and the workshop have agreed not to publish the findings so we can perhaps close this thread.

I notice this some times happens on here. Some one comes and asks for advice and help, only to not respond or be courteous and acknowledge the time Some one took to help.

The owner of the car went on vacation till the end of the month. Some of you (not all) are acting like old nonnas. Im sure when the OP is back from Italy and has time to take care of everything, he will be back on here clarifying everything. In the meantime....we should relax.

What is to take care of? Call to truck , haul car to the reputable mechanic and pick up repaired car when you arrive back home from vacation.
