When I bought my first car, a jallopy, Ford Anglia, I bought a new Timex watch,

When I bought my first 'E' type Jaguar (18 years old) I owned a Timex watch

When I bought my first Lotus Esprit I owned a Timex watch

When I bought my first Ferrari I still owned a Timex watch, I can't remember where I threw it but next time I find it I am going to throw it in the bin, what rubbish Timex watches are.

Omega Speedmaster, bought one of the first after Neil Armstrong landed on the moon with one on his wrist, paid £75 for it in Gurnsey in the sixth decade of the last century, cost you £1700 now, have bought 4 others since in various shades of Stainless and Gold, functional, dress wear or can be worn to work. Not into very fancy watches, too much bling makes Dave a dull boy.

Well, if I am driving my 360, I'll wear my 50th Anniversary Submariner with the green dial...goes well with the special ordered Verde(green) interior and matching Verde Schedoni luggage. Yes, I has a silver/green 360...bet you never seen one of those.

If I'm driving my 360 Challenge, I'll stick with my normal Rolex Submariner, can't go wrong with that watch at all.

If I'm in the 348 Challenge...ok I'll shut up now.

I couldnt give a damn about watches they are for telling the time nothing more. Ferraris are for driving not image building

Reminds me of an old Chinese proverb though.....

A man with one watch knows what time it is.

A man with two watches can never really be sure. :D

But surely cars are for nothing more than driving (a task that the majority of people only do to get from A to B via C. The fools)...

It's not the image of these things that appeal (my guess is that 99.9% of people wouldn't know what a Blancpain or Zenith is). It's the engineering that goes into them, and the aesthetics of the design. It's the materials used and the craftsmanship that you can see goes into every element of it.

Electronics can give better accuracy and a shed load more functions on a watch these days. But imagine how difficult it is to get some of these functions, and pretty good accuracy out of something that's made out of cogs and springs. And is small enough to fit on your wrist. Amazing.

Your digital watch is the equivalent of a BMW M5 (and, to be balanced, increasingly like modern Ferraris! Electronics everywhere to make a car good). They look OK, and are undoubtedly effective tools. But one could argue that it's lacking character and charm and is just that bit too clinical.

Sometimes it's the way you get there, rather than the destination itself, that's most important...anyone who's been to Basildon will understand that :)

    Ok, here goes:

    Vintage Heuer Monaco
    Vintage Heuer Autavia 1972
    Vintage Heuer Carrera 1971
    Heuer Carrera 1964 re-edition
    1970 Rolex Submariner 5513
    Heuer Diver 844/3
    Panerai Luminor Marina PAM111E
    Seiko Helicopter pilots watch

I would reccommend a Panerai, one of two depending on funds:
    - Panerai Radiomir Base Pam210 £2200 ish
    - Panerai Radiomir Chrono Pam163 £10k ish

    Good Luck,
    Ian

Ian, you are a man with taste, sir. You have 3 of my favourites on your list. Seiko is a good choice too but is it a mid '70s version?

I got it about 10 years ago. You will find a couple on www.chronomaster.co.uk. Unfortunately it is a quartz as it was the last watch that I purchased before I got into "real" (i.e. mechanical) watches.

    Cheers, Ian

If you could have a Richard Mille RM Tourbillon, RRP 126,000.. ( I saw it on that site posted - most expensive one) or a 360 and a 355... would you take the watch or the 2 cars?

Got mine for a tenner off Ebay.

It has a nice Ferrari logo on the face and only loses approximately one minute per hour.

Don't wear it anymore cos it's too bling :)
