seriously, does anybody pay attention to forecasts anymore? i find it a tad annoying when people (friends and family and stuff) say "oh tomorrow it's going to be....." blah blah, i mean they (weatherguys) lie/are wrong nearly all of the time, how is it people still listen to these guys!!!??

i was never really that interested, all i ever needed to know was whether it was going to be stinking hot, over 35 C (90f), other than that i don't really care what it's like.

recently i had the weather piped through as a listing on my google homepage and found it was soooooo wrong so much of the time that i just got rid of it.

today all weather forecasts for adelaide said min 24 max 36, hot and sunny all day.... it's 4pm here, 22 degrees, thunderstorms and pissing down.

i love the rain, which is why i was always annoyed that they'd be forecasting some in the next day or so and we'd never see any... surely it can't be *that* hard... bloody hell it's 2006 man! in 2015 Doc Brown can predict local rain to the second!!!! :p

Earlier this year I was planning to go to Chicago on a Saturday... on Tuesday the forecast said it would be sunny and warm on Saturday... on Wednesday I checked and Saturday's high was a little lower and it would be slightly cloudy instead of sunny, etc.. by Friday it was supposed to be cold and rainy! Ha so that trip was canceled.

that's my point... 'supposed to be...' was said so many times incorrectly yet you *still* cancelled a trip based on what it was 'supposed' to be....

    so, what was it?

Heard a good weather related response on a TV show the other night. One guy said "when you hear a weather report saying there's an 80% chance of rain do you take an umbrella? The guy responded, yes, then asked what he would do. He said, I look out the window! Even the largest super computers can't predict the weather accurately more than three days in advance. I guess that's why forcasts have percentages and probabilities. Florida has fairly predictable weather, it changes constantly!

A few years ago, there was an article in the one of the newspapers about how US weather forecasting had slipped to # <whatever> in accuracy.

A few months later I saw someone saying that "We'll soon be able to predict the weather for the next 10 years". Hmm I can do that too - warm in summer/ cold in winter.

My armchair opinion is that the computer models are pretty messed up.

I dunno, I seldom watch the local 'news' anymore, all it seems to be is crime, politics, erroneous weather, or some 'athlete' being in trouble for doing something wrong/bad on or off the court/field/rink.

I DO think it's funny that it was 67 here on Monday, and 18 yesterday....

The noaa forecast is my home page. (Two convertibles). ;)

I munged up a cron job on my unix box to log the hourly temp, press, and wind data from that site, so I can plot that against my DSL drop-outs. :p (Especially wind -- the phone lines in this neighborhood are 50 years old.) But I suspect the barometer data is a little post-real-time.

On the forecast, I've noticed that you get to recognize the different shifts. In the Boston area, the day shift forecaster was a pessimist, and the night shift was an optimist. ;)

But when they say "30% probability of precipitation", it means that you might get showers over 30% of the forecast area -- it might rain where you are, but not a half mile away.

The weather channel, this very morning, was saying 90% chance of rain, with heavy thunderstorms with strong winds today by 12:00 (when I got out of a 3 hour stretch of class...)

Anyways, I get out of class and it's sunny and dry... and still is.

Atleast they usually get the temperature close enough... but when it comes to precipitation, they are full of crap.
