I do. We lived in Darwin in ‘82/83 Somehow my old man became good friends with the base commander (this was before Tindal existed). (BTC story warning) As a nine year old I got to sit in the cockpit and rear gunners position of a B-52, cockpit and air to air refuellers station of a KC-135, and the cockpit of a Mirage. I’ll never forget the very stern instruction not to touch the ejection handles...
Tindal existed, just not in the format it is today We took an F-111 there back in '82 to see if it could be made operational. ...... the 111 sucked up part of the runway and destroyed an engine .... needless to say they didn't give Tindal a five star rating
Not really shore about the Honda Jets. If I was in the market for a personal jet, they wouldn’t be seriously considered. There’s a lot to think about beyond performance numbers when you’re thinking about private jets. It’s not like a car where you just buy the one that seems cool and mostly get away with it. See Eclipse and the Cirrus jet for examples. Pretend jets for rich wankers with more money than brains / skill.
I’d be happy with a Navajo....Loved that aeroplane in my early days...Better than the citation I flew....
Navajo is a good personal aircraft. Chieftain genuinely scary though, fully loaded. Best piston twin I ever flew was a friends C414A. Lovely aircraft in every respect. We think about this a lot. Will probably buy something in the next few years, but it won’t be a twin. Most likely a Piper Mirage / M350.
So in your experience Steve, what is the best twin engine personal jet on the market today?, be it used or new, just curious
Yeah I flew the chieftain fully loaded out of Lord Howe Island...I hated it.. Lost 10 years off my life every departure and landing..
Money no object, PC-24 or Phenom 300 (bearing in mind it must be single-pilot). However, if I was spending my own money it’d be a 10 year old CJ2+ or if the budget stretched, a newer CJ4.
I mate was in an aero club in the UK. They "bought" (paid 5000 pounds for fuel) a Vulcan the RAF was decommissioning - it was parked next to/over the clubhouse. In the cockpit was a sign "Do not touch any of the controls - this plane starts!"
Thanks Steve, I enjoy looking at these planes and as long as your alive theres always a chance, you never know
Reminds me of a story, two Radiologists I know from Sydney bought a MiG fighter jet (? Ex Polish ) about 25 years ago. Think they paid about $150k for it. They had it out for the first time and started the engine, the thing caught fire and burnt to the ground. The End
