hello all, i may have an opportunity to go to Romania to work on an aircraft that is having some difficulties. i know it helps to know WHERE in Romanian, but i must first find out from The Company if i can disclose that on here.

i have never been outside of the USA , and i am looking for some general advice on the safety of this region in general. the team and i may be there for up to 6 months, though details are unclear other than the fact that "several" of us technicians will be needed to assess and repair the customers aircraft. if , in the event i get to go, i would love to meet some folks if i am allowed to travel any once our work is completed.

i am not a "political" operson and i have no intention to discuss the war or any other events. while i am there i will act as if i am a guest in someones home, and respect thier ways and rules. i almost went to Germany a month or so ago, but the trip was cancelled. any help would be great, i know very little about the people or culture of Romania, if we are notified that we are going i will make an effort to learn what i can!!! thank you, Michael.

    Michael,

Rumania is still very eastern European. Most of the former eastern European countries try to have economical growth and want to join the European Union. (like Poland and Hungary). Rumania has a low economy, is poor and is politically difficult with a dictatorial history. It is absolutely a beautiful country with a lot of culture, but the low economical status will set the overall tone.

    Ton

PS: you can not compare this country with any of the European countries.

thank you, the politics are going to determine if we can go or not. there are are 2 government agencies involved one has jusidiction outside of a hangar, the other has jusidiction inside a hangar. i have heard it is a beautiful though economically poor country. i dont want to be killed or attacked because i am an American. i would like to go and help with the situation if allowed to do so. Rumania? is that the correct name now? forgive my ignorance!! :)

the only "other" experience or knowledge i have of these regions is from collection Eastern Block weapons. i have several "Romanian" firearms, along with some old cold war Russian stuff. weapons with the *CCCP* and the Hammer and Sickle here are getting to be quite valuable. again, i am not a "political" person, just a collector of mechanical / historical things.

i have heard/read that some of the women there can be quiet beautiful, i have a weakness for Blondes !! :) best . Michael

    Michael,

    Women are beautiful everywhere! :)

The political situation in Rumania (we call it Roemenie in Dutch) is difficult. Usually the situation is a bit tense.
I don't expect any difficulty for you because you are an American. Those days are over i.m.o.

    Michael,

I visited Bucharest in Romania regularly for over 8 years (1995-2003) and it is one of the places I could easily move to. Sure, it's a little "rough & ready" by western European standards, bat that's also it's charm. I will get some security information for you but, quite honestly, just be savvy and you'll be OK. I travelled into the country on a project as well and believe me, it's a cool place!

Girls? Say no more...you'll probably want to move there! ;)

    Cheers, MARK

Mike - then you MUST go! I am a collector too and you can still find magnificent old firearms, war stuff, old watches and antiques in Romania at outstanding prices. Cost of living (if you're earning Dollars) is low - you will have incredible buying power there.

As far as I'm concerned, the people there don't hate Americans more that anywhere else. Don't stress - as Ton says, it's not an issue.

    Enjoy! MARK

The security service that I use indicates that there are currently no security alerts for Romania.

    INTRODUCTION TO ROMANIA

Location: On the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine.
    Time Zone: GMT +2.

After decades of isolation, Romanians overthrew their Soviet-era dictator in 1989 and established a constitutional republic. The former Communists were swept from power in 1996. Romania is a country of remote, almost medieval, villages and spas in mountain valleys, and of posh Black Sea resorts.

The country is also known for Transylvania, a region of ethnic Hungarians and the reputed ancestral home of Vlad the Impaler, on whom the fictional Dracula is based.

Romania's climate is one of sunny, warm summers with frequent thunderstorms, and cold, overcast winters. Romania has no natural hazards, and few environmental problems.

Ostensibly descended from Romanized Dacians, about 70% of Romanians are Romanian Orthodox, and a large percentage of the remainder are atheist. A large Gypsy population has found a home here. Most people speak Romanian; German and English are prevalent in areas frequented by tourists.

Most Romanian cities are served by a good rail network with connections to Western Europe through Vienna. The road network is somewhat limited and is in poor repair. Driving is only for the adventurous because of narrow country and inner-city roads, few highways, and a prevalence of farm machinery; traffic drives on the right. The mass transit system is relatively efficient.

Violent crime involving travelers is uncommon, but there is a rise in the number of crimes in which victims are injured. Pickpocketing, theft, robbery and muggings are prevalent, and most incidents occur in areas frequented by travelers such as shopping centers and public transportation hubs.

ATMs can be found, sparsely, only in the major cities. Credit cards are only accepted in upscale shops and hotels. The telephone system is in poor shape, but modernization is in progress. English-language media are available in most large cities, usually in the pricier establishments.

Romanian food is tasty and generally safe. No trip to Romania is complete without sampling the country's excellent wines. Though hotel prices tend to be closer to Western norms in Bucharest, most travelers exchanging Western currencies will find Romania a bargain.

sorry for the delayed response, i have been busy getting the 308 put back together! thank you all so very much for the information!
if i go, it will be for work with several other aircraft technicians. i will have to be very careful what i do so as not to anger any of the "management".

i am the type to enjoy the history and people, i doubt i will be able to bring much back with me though! i should know something more after the holidays, word has it we wont be going until after the first of the year. i have always wanted to visit various sites in Europe, may as well let The Company pay for it! :)
