Apart from the yellow box tax why are the thermostats so bloody expensive? I mean $154 for what should be a $20 item at most. Is it some special design that only Ferrari uses?

When I replaced mine I spend a lot of time doing research for a substitute. I didn't ever find one and I didn't want to remove the old one first and then go on a quest while the car was out of service. Visiting various auto parts stores in the U.S. might be a viable option, but here in Italy auto parts stores are pretty rare and the clerks aren't usually very knowledgeable about their stock, much less about what might be available elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the specifications associated with a thermostat give the temperature plus something like "Fits Volvo all 1800 and Ford Pinto 1965 to 1972". Digging up actual dimensions is not easy, or at least it wasn't for me.

So I gave up and bought the yellow box. I'm not happy about it though.

There are some dimensions floating around. I recall posting in a thread about it.
