    Folks,

    Open floor to corrections...

I noticed our beloved F119 based and derived machines with the wasted spark ignition system, eg 2 coild driving 4 plugs, 1 fires while at the very end of the compression stroke and its "twin" fires at the end of the exhaust stroke. You can check the schematics/circuit diagrams, or by swapping the HT leads between cylinders 8&5, 7&6, 1&4 and 2&3. (The difference is neglegible and a rougher running if you disconnect the injectors for 6&7 is the only adverse difference).

Using the principle of electricity following the path of least potential to ground, it follow logically that if there is a material difference in the plug gaps, HT lead resistance (measured as ohms per unit length) and added to the increased conductivity of a compressed gas with fuel (more molecules are more conductive than less) mixed within it compared to almost a vacuum at the end of the exhaust stroke (the exiting exhaust gas practically causes a vacuum behind it as it exits the cylinder), then there can be instances where the spark may go or not go the the desired cylinder...

I tried all the usual, cleaning injectors, checking CPS, MAF etc. and set the plugs to .7mm - all making no major difference. Then I thought if I measured the plug cables and paired them up by closest resistance and regap the plugs and pair them up in as close a match in terms of wear, etc. I did that and when I wired everything up I started the car... The running was AMAZINGLY smooth. The start before the change was occasionally skipping a beat, an occasional poof etc. If I put it in 3rd gear at 1700 RPM and floored it, it would hiccup until 2500 then be very smooth, now it is smooth from 1500 rpms (as a test, I usually shift past 5500 RPM, but flooring it at low RPM on a low gear is a good test for timing etc.).

Also went to .6mm which after trying it made using 97 octane unleaded completely equal to using Shell's Optimax 100 octane when I was at .7mm

Am I dreaming or is there some sense to this?

Well I guess there must be some sence to it if it worked. Maybe the problem is that your plug leads are starting to go bad. A pin hole in one of them. Or, maybe there just weren't fully connected to the spark plug end, and when you pulled everything out and reset it made a better connection. Honestly the electrical system in our cars is CRAP. Cheap wiring and bad design. But the design is 20 years old now.
