Thermostat housing leaking

I have seen a rebuild thread where someone cuts the dud end off, taps the housing the fits a brass tube., but thats some work. Nice result though.

I would remove the hose, drain and dry, sand back with emery, insert a wood dowel and use a two part epoxy to fill the hold, let it set, remove the dowel, sand it smooth, put hose back on perhaps with a little silicone, two clamps if they fit (?). Test it idling, drive the pants off it and check ebay for a cheap housing. Do a tstat change at the same time.

I will probably get flamed for proposing this...

 

They are threaded into the housing. Buy new ones and put them in. Not a horrible job. I believe they are straight thread and not pipe thread so you can easily run a tap in the hole if there is any issues with the hole left behind. There is a stainless version made by Hill that make this the last time it never needs replacing:

Thats cool, hadn't seen those before. Guess some multi grips would work to get the old pipe out? Any tricks or tips?

 

Vise grips will probably crush and destroy the part that sticks out before it unscrews. Guess why I think that? Still, I'd try that first. Then I'd either use an "easy out" or just drill it and pick out the bits depending on how lucky I felt.

I made this part for my old GT4, I don't know if the Hill part wasn't available then or I just didn't know about it.

This is an item that will eventually need replacing on all our cars.

 

I don't remember the size. You could buy the replacement part and see what it is. And you might do the nipple right next do it as well. It is just as old and has exactly the same coolant running through it. And if you feel really adventurous you could do the one that sticks out of the head that feeds the heater as well.
