No, not ME, sadly.....I will come, for Goodwood! But, if my two little starlings are going the "one knapsack bag, and Youth Hostel" route, in the following locales, what are the "Don't Miss" attractions?? 9/09 - 9/17 London 9/17 - 9/19 Edinburg 9/19 - 9/21 Dublin 9/21 - 9/23 Galway 9/23 - 9/26 Prague 9/26 - 9/29 Amsterdam I guess they get rolled, and lose all their "stuff" at the last stop!!! We are Scots Irish, on the Craig side, so....a homecoming trip of sorts! I admit some jealously...celebration, of recent college degrees. Thanks to all, for suggestions.
First thing is they need to look for event dates in the Euro format ! I'll have a think over the next few days In Amsterdam take a boat trip around the canals and in Edinburgh the open top bus tour (weather permitting) - bus & boat in London Do they have any specific interests ?
They are planning to interface with "the locals" as they reach each area. The Hostels have a concierge.. It's really more about "letting the steam out" as they graduated with Masters MPA degrees, in accounting, and then last Tuesday took their professional exams, for Certification. They start in October. My Amanda specialized in International Tax Law. She does a it favor her Mom..a bit. My attendance ay University of Texas in Austin was very much impacted, by Stevie Ray Vaughan playing late, at Clifford Antone's Blues Club. They threw me out of campus housing too, and I was in the Athletic dorm, with the Team!! Thanks, Jimmie!
For Amsterdam the 10 seat open boat is more fun than the 200 seat Mouche Blue Sky Boat, open boat - Blue Boat Company - Canal Cruises in Amsterdam - several operators For a good final supper there the local menu plateau superior in 'theseafoodbar' is recommended Major London museums are free - being students they may not 'do' mornings anyway but the queues tend to be then so try them after lunch (this applies generally to the paid ones) - event listings are in timeout.com/london - there is also a free printed edition Lots of places do student discount so bring id - half price theatre booth in Leicester Square TKTS - London Theatre Tickets - beware imitators - in fact thats quite a good premise generally Buses are more fun than the tube unless you are travelling a long way
I see where you're coming from. The Blues Bar in Camden is a lively spot for graduates. Just tell 'em to keep their cash in their socks
That is around the corner from my flat. They should visit Camden Market; there's a great atmosphere up there. You need to tell us what they enjoy wrt to culture, shopping, history, food etc. London has everything and more. The other towns on the list are much easier; they're all tiny in comparison
Thanks so much everyone....like me, she does enjoy an art exhibition. They were at Houston MFA only last week... My buddy Jesse Dayton wrote a song, "Camden Town"..The Clash and Joe Strummer from there, correct?? I am emailing all of these to her, her phone is on but International Roaming is outrageous! Mom's real estate agent called my sister on vacation in Costa Rica and it really hit the fan! I really appreciate the help.
Apart from the usual spots London Dungeons, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, London Eye, The South Bank, St Pauls, Houses of Parliament, Leicester Square, Royal Air Force Museum London, apparently there’s also London Motor Museum in Hayes (but never been and don’t know anyone that has) Ditto “Camden Town/Camden Market” is also a favourite of mine, though there's currently some changes going on there. There’s also Portobello Road Market (one end is very disappointing, the rest is ok) and Covent Garden. Also always meant to try out the “Duck tours” (Tour of London via the roads and river in an amphibious bus. Can’t comment on clubs though, never been much of a clubber.
We have the Duck Tours on Galveston Island also, but there's been a recent horrific crash in the US involving one....
IN Amsterdam obviously there's the Rijksmuseum - fantastic collection but go the opposite direction to any crowd so as to see just what else they have - Edinburgh's National Museum of Scotland has fascinating stuff and a great rooftop restaurant - in London Tate Modern is just about the building (unless you are really really into modern art....) - the original Tate's collection is more interesting as is the V&A which is pretty unmissable
Thanks so much Jimmie...feeding this to them via email... By luck, they found the Tate today and LOVED it!!
Sorry I'm late! I think castles are the quintessential European experience. London: see the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels. Dark history and the crown is opulent. Edinburgh: Edinburgh Castle is magnificent. Competes closely with Windsor for title of best castle in the UK. Prague: very close to Charles Bridge, there's a company that does Segway Tours of the city. Excellent way to see the layout early on in the trip. The castle and cathedral are both impressive, as is the Stahov Monastic Brewery on top of the hill overlooking the city. Try the beer-marinaded ribs there, they were very memorable. Goulash is also a popular dish throughout Prague and coffee in any number of street cafes early morning was great. All the best, Andrew.
Most probably not their thing but if anyone's ever in Dublin and theyre a fan of the Italian Job go and visit Kilmainham Gaol/Jail - its where the famous staircase scene of Mr Bridgerstaircase was shot https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g186605-d191025-i67524954-Kilmainham_Gaol-Dublin_County_Dublin.html Ona more Girly note they would most probably like a shop called Brown Thomas in Grafton Street
If they have heard of Amy Winehouse (Rip) they might like to drop into The Hawley Arms, its quite a lively old pub right by Camden Market. It was her favourite hang out back in those days, was quite normal to see her in there. (might be a bit late though..just saw they leaving on 17 tomorrow)
Rijks is great but could be a bit overwhelming. If time is limited, visiting just the Van Gough museum is also not a bad idea. Tell them to avoid the touristy spots in Amsterdam downtown and go to bars and restaurants where the locals go (better food and better atmosphere). Most of the cafes in touristy areas sell pretty bad stuff if the girls would like to smoke some. Once again go local. And I agree with the suggestions above, Camden market is a favorite of mine as well.
Not far; they mostly hung out further west; Maida Vale & Notting Hill. The whole band once stayed on my living room floor over a long weekend. But that was in another city and another story..
As a personal aside, and I feel the UK Section holds a lot of people I call friends.. My lady had brain surgery this morning..(she got ready while I was off racing at COTA!). She insisted I proceed with my plans... In any event, the docs are finished, and pleased with results.....she's off to ICU for two days...and hopefully recalls me when she awakes....
..so.....all is well, I hope... *fingers and everything else, crossed* Image Unavailable, Please Login
The only comfort I have, about the vices of Amsterdam, is......they are from Austin!! I don't think they waste much time in pursuits of the sort...
Best wishes to her, and to you tex.... I look forward to good news that the surgery went well and she feels awesome real quickly
