At the new year I am thinking of a fellow employee that died after a MVC. Anthony was driving home from a bar one rainy night & spun out in a turn at the post office on the south side. He hit the tree front on with the dash crushing him and ripping the flesh from his legs. He bled out on scene but was transported to our trauma center alive w/ resuscitation where one of his legs was amputated. Anthony’s family flew in from Alaska to find him in a coma responding slightly on the 1st day. He developed a fever of 106 2 days later and his brain herniated. Anthony’s wife, a nurse at our hospital, made the decision to stop life support. The fact that our level 1 trauma center was only a few miles away was not enough. Anthony died despite the most advanced medical care available. Every time I drive by that scared tree in front of the post office I think of Anthony. Think before you drive this weekend.

It is a strange situation because on the one hand you can feel for then loss by his friends and family. On the other hand if he was drunk I also have little sympathy for him personally and his stupidity.

Well - drunk driving is a horrible thing and i won't defend it.

But who among has not ever driven when we shouldn't have.

Perhaps he had drank to much. Maybe he had not- just being at a bar does not make you drunk.

So it is sad to hear about anyone who expires from an accident of any kind.

Personally- i would rather die at the scene then to survive for a couple days like a vegetable.
