My 348 is in need of a major, which I intend to do myself right after Christmas. I have access to a 2 post lift at the Community College where I teach math. The problem is, however, that I don't want to leave the car there for days while I get parts. If I could anticipate everything I need ahead of time that would be great. But if I don't I'm not too thrilled with the idea of leaving the car there for a few days to a week. Yes I realize I could probably buy a relatively cheap 2 post lift but I really don't want to have it taking up space in my garage.

Am I correct in saying that the main consideration is safely lifting the car high enough to roll the engine out from under it? I have read a little about the 2 floor jack method, which I might do. But how about this?

I erect a structure using 4x4's in my garage. I use the rafters to steady, not support the structure. Then I use another 4x4 under the car and lift the back with two strong come alongs. My understanding is that the car weighs about 1500 pounds without the engine/trans assembly. So I would be lifting about 750 pounds with two come alongs. Even if it is closer to 2000 pounds and I'm lifting 1000 with the come alongs I'm sure it would be fine.

I did something similar when I rebodied a C4 Corvette as a Jeep CJ7 a few years ago. The jeep body was very light, perhaps 300 pounds, but the principal is the same.

I would go the 2 jack route before I do the 2 come along with 4x4 method. There is nothing wrong with the 2 jack method. I do it all the times with the 911 Porsche

A 4x4 structure made of vertical 2x4s? To lift a car? You teach math or maybe comedy routines instead? Otherwise you're just yanking our cranks. ;)

Sounds like a terrible idea (sorry). Why would you even attempt to save a few dollars on a lift (or leaving your car at a shop) and ghetto-rig something that you know is unsafe? The simple fact that you are uncomfortable enough to ask is probably an answer enough that it's a bad idea.

    a) leave your car at the shop and pay a small fee
    b) buy a lift. I got a MaxJax lift and it takes up minimal space in my garage. The "I don't have room" excuse is hard to make with the MaxJax
    c) use the two jack method as laid out by Earnie

Creative solutions are always welcome...but your life is worth more than some shop fees.

On the plus side...congrats on wanting to do the major yourself!

I would go with a portable mid rise that you can move out of the way and store when not needed. I'm torn between a 4 post and one of those, bonus to the portable unit is that you can take it to the track with you (which should come in handy next time we blow a motor 2 hours into a 24 hour race and have to change it).

I think your overcomplicating it. I did my major using the 2 jack method with no problem.

I make my living doing things differently and creating things that most others don't envision, so I like your outside the box thinking but not sure this is the place to test it.

By doing the DIY service you are already ahead of the game and picking up a portable maxjax or portable sissor lift still let syou come out money ahead and then have a very usefull tool for your continued automotive projects in 100% safety and efficiency

Follow Ernies 2 jack method. It's safe (most important) and surprisingly easy. It took me 8 hours the first time I did it and that's including checking and rechecking each step a couple of times as I went thru the process. The other thing to consider is once you get in there you'll surely find some unplanned things that need attention.

All of what he said. No time restraints short of a couple of weeks are acceptable.

You have balls, I'd never do that. As a side note, I have a 2 post and it is taking time to get comfortable. Having a car 6 feet above your head is a bit nerve racking when you don't do it every day.

I agree, I get nervous even in a shop when I walk under a car on a 2 post lift.

I would have rather used a 2 post lift when I did my engine out. I contemplated buying one although I just couldn't make it fit satisfactory in my garage. Only have 9ft ceilings.

I want to see pics. Maybe you can do a post after called "engine out 4x4 rafter method".

You can buy those really tall screw jacks and once its up put them underneath at the jacking points. That way your only using the rafters as a temporary crane. Just keep in mind its closer to the 2000 ppound mark.

With the two jack method, you never have to be under the car without jackstands or the like as emergency support.
