I've tracked my BMW M cars in the past and had a blast. I'd like to dip my toe in the water with the 355 and start with an Autocross event at Qualcomm stadium (a very large course setup). Any advice or tips?

As this will be my first Autocross event, I'm not real concerned with where I finish - I just want to have a good time and learn some of my limits in the car.

Personally I wouldn't do it; autox beats the car pretty hard and the 355 wouldn't do that well (no torque). Plus you'll have to put up with all the kids in modded hondas getting better times. I love doing autox in my STi, but won't bother in the Ferrari. Those are meant for track days ;)

So I decided to go ahead and sign up for the AutoX being put on by the local BMW car club (you have to be a member to drive in it).

I want to explore the handling boundaries of the car in a relatively safe environment. I suppose the worst I can do is eat a rubber cone. If things get really nuts I guess I could wrap it around one of those concrete stantions holding a light pole but I seriously doubt this will happen.

There are only 20 non-BMW spots allowed on Saturday and I've got one of them....so not too worried about souped up Hondas driven by spotty teenagers handing me my ass. Besides, hey, I'm the guy in the F355, I've already won!!

Oh, and I'll be sure to take plenty of bumper level HD video with my GoPro video camera. :D

Cool, for sure post how it runs / handles and share pics and videos! I never taped up my bumper in an autox...but I probably would on the 355, save that paint job from cones and stones.

And yes, no matter how she runs you'll for sure have the coolest car there :D

I don't know if this qualifies as advice or not but the mid-engine design of the F355 has a low polar moment of inertia. Normally, this is a good thing because it helps the car rotate more freely when going into a corner and will not understeer. Unfortunately, I found that on a slow speed autocross track with tight slaloms that this is actually a liability, especially on street tires. That's why there is a stack of Hoosier A6 tires sitting next to me right now.

If you also are experiencing low speed oversteer, try to lower the front tire pressures and/or raise the rear tire pressures. Street tires don't respond as much as race tires to these pressure changes but it's a lot better than looping the car on a 50-foot cone slalom.

You will have fun, but the 355 is actually too big and heavy to be competitive.

But go and have fun, and waste some tires!

go for it sandy...not enough F guys doing auto-x or trackdays. You should come run speedventures auto-x at cal speed with us. We get the bar be que going its pretty fun. Do a track day sometime with us too. These cars are for driving and any streetcar can be made competent on track. What you really need is to do more events like this and get a second set of tires preferably 355C wheels then you will be having some fun.

Some good advice there. I'll try the tire pressure trick if it feels too sloppy. I am running on PS2s - so about as good of a grippy street tire as you can hope for.

The good news is that at Qualcomm, they lay out a course a MILE long. There's actually a chance that I'll get out of 2nd gear. :)

Yeah, seriously, just looking to have fun and learn about handling the car without killing anyone. I will invest in a lot of blue painter's tape to keep the chipping down to a minimum.

Now that's an idea I am really loving. A set of challenge wheels and race rubber. Hmmm...warming up favorite search engine now...

BTW, anyone here in SoCal doing track events with their F-car? With what outfit...Speedventures? I know I could take the F355 to a BMW event - and they always run a nice event. Maybe I'll do that later this spring.

There are many groups norcal and socal:

SCCA and NASA have timetrials and races and race/TT schools
AROSC.org is one of the best has hpde, TT, and race group is a very casual atmosphere and race/TT/hpde schools
WestCoast racing has race and HPDE used to be the home of the Socal FCA trackevents

    Trackday local organizations:
    speedventures
    speedtrialusa
    green flag
    redline track events

That's all I can think of right now.
