I am considering buying this 2006 Ducati Paul Smart limited edition . I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with the bike. I am looking to get a bike that has a great design and could be collectible in the future. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

The PS is a great bike. Basically it is the Sport Classic but with better suspension (Ohlins fully adjustable front and rear) and limited to 2000 pieces. I've actually be seriously considering this bike instead of a different daily driver.

Basically if you like the Sport Classic, you will love the Paul Smart. There are plenty of guys out there who are customizing the Sport Classics and Paul Smarts and many are creating custom parts for them...many of which make it look even more vintage cafe racer. Definitely some cool stuff.

IMO, I think of any new Ducati (other than the 1098S, Desmosedici, or maybe the 848), the Sport Classic and more specifically, the Paul Smart will be a bike that will be desired 30 years from now.

Edit: If the PS interest you, check out this SE1000 for sale. It is #27/100 made. More of a late 70s, 80s vibe with the black and gold: http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=42757

That's a beauty and pictures don't do it justice at all! As far as being collectable; only to a niche market but yes it could be. If you can handle the near extreme sportbike riding position it'll be more fun to ride than to store away as in investment.

Very nice. The best of the bunch of retros Ducati did IMHO. I would very much like to have that bike.

I love all Ducs (yes, even the old Paso's! :D) but have you considered an HD 883R? Its real cheap, have tons of aftermarket bits and pieces (to convert into an old style cafe racer), cheap to own/operate, have tons of potential and could be considered "desirable" (classic?) in the future.

Thanks for all you help I really like that Ducati . I have never seen that model in red though.I am also looking at a 1995 Aprilia Moto 6.5 They seem to be hard to locate in the US though. Anybody know of one for sale ?

They don't offer the Paul Smart in red (otherwise it wouldn't be a Paul Smart!). You can get a Sport Classic 1000S (not the biposto) in red and it will still be the single seat. If you wanted dual seat you'd want the biposto.

It might be collectible in the sense that it is likely to depreciate less than the other SportClassic models, but as an investment the return will be dismal. If the MH900e and other rare Ducatis like the 888 are any indication, it will bottom at perhaps 2/3 of original MSRP and hold there for many years.

It is without a doubt the most generally desirable of the SportClassic models so far.

+1 Same with F-Cars unless you're gunning for the "true collectors' series"! The only bikes that I know of that can be considered as "investments" would be the Vincent's, the first model Indian's, etc..

In my observation motorcycles are more steady than Ferraris. Certain models like the Boxer, Dino, and 288GTO have seen a big rise over the last five years, but will also probably sell for less than today at some point in the future.

Bikes seem a little more predictable, but the chances for extremely rapid appreciation on any one model is very low.

In short, they sell at a premium when the weather's nice! :D
