I will admit this is nuts. The short version is in February I bought an 05 Porsche Boxster S (my 3rd one) because I love the car and most importantly I can use it for work which is where/why I do 90% of my driving. Then stuck in the snowy storm started to look on the web and was amazed at the prices of the 360s. So, I sold my Porsche, without even registering or driving the car more than 5 miles, and bought a sweet red/tan 6sp 360 from Scottsdale Ferrari. The car is simply amazing and is a very involving driving experience. It is the most amazing car I have been in, driven, seen, etc. It is a work of art. But....since March I've only put 500 miles on it. I can't use the Fcar for work and really only use it when I want to go for a drive in it. Last month the trips were to the local C&C (3 miles away) and to WaWa for soda. Completely my fault for not using the car more. Now I am beginning to think of all the times I could use a Boxster and times when I can't use the 360. All of a sudden my work commutes could be in a convt, with an iPod, heated seats, etc. I knew all of this going into the Fcar purchase but now think about selling it and getting another Boxster S.

Has anyone else gone through this? If I could drive the car often I would never think of selling. I'm just thinking out loud here and was curious is anyone else had these thoughts or sold their Fcar for a more practical fun car.

Sell it and buy the boxster. Do what makes you happy.

To me, an occasional drive in a Ferrari beats out a more frequent drive in any other car. No other make would make me as happy or as connected - my Ferrari is not for sale unless desperate times forces me to compromise.

I agree with Speedie, I drive an average car to work each week - but on weekends out comes my 360 and I love it. To use an F-Car as a daily drive (in my opionion) is like eating lobster every night - it loses it's appeal - so I limit my drives, but when I do drive it's ^%$#king great.

John, this may sound like strange advise on this forum, but your situation and your feelings are not that unique, though your honesty is. As you might remember I no longer own a Ferrari, now have a Gallardo and a car that was once a 997S cab, and I drive both these cars everywhere. When I bought the 1st or 4 Ferrari's I owned, I was afraid to take it to places I could not see it where I parked it, and for that reason I did not drive it or enjoy it as much as I should have. My last Ferrari was a 430 coupe which I sold because my 3 year old twins thought it was great to climb all over, and I did not have the time to drive it as much as I wanted to. I now look at my cars as cars, not works of art not something to be admired, but something to drive, I think for some of us, that takes awhile to realize, and maybe some never do. I drove my Gallardo to the KOP mall today, and parked it like I was parking my 550 or my range rover, because hey, now I see as just a car. If you spend as much as these cars cost and can not enjoy them, then you should without a doubt go back to a Porsche.

I agree - my 612 gets driven 3 days a week plus. I believe that it depreciates less than any other dd in the 170k range. If you do not or can not enjoy your car and bugs ya - ditch it and get something you will enjoy.

If you sell it - you'll miss it and want another one. Find more excuses to go take it out.

The 360 can be driven daily, I did it with mine. Do it for a week and see if you change your mind.

Just wonder why not using your 360 more?
    1) mileage?
    2) mechanical wear?
    3) Door dings?
    4) attention?
    5) ride comfort?

I guess I don't understand why you can't just keep the ferrari and drive it when the desire hits you? Do you see it as money wasted cause it just sits in the garage begging for attention?

If the funds permit it would be great to have both. I bought a 993 as a daily so I get that classic car feel with new car reliability (and rust proofing). I use the 308 to commute when the weather permits.

If I could drive it for work I would. I'm in sales and could never take this to my accounts. I'm also in several different places through out the day. Some days I drive 40 miles and others 200. It's not the parking, or dings it's the car itself although at some accounts the parking is terrible. If I go through with this I can pick and choose the days the Boxster would be used. Doubt I'd take it for a 200 mile trip on the highway. I'm taking the 360 out today, somewhere just to get it out. However, looking to tomorrow I am heading to a nice rural account where I could easily take a boxster but still impossible to take the 360.

Your feelings are not that unusual. And most of us are in a similar situation where we need a daily driver that "flies under the radar" at work. I drive an Audi S5 convertible as my daily driver for the same reason.

Sounds like you really need to find a way to own both cars, a daily driver and a Ferrari.

As far as the Ferrari side of things, given some of the things you've said, you might enjoy a different body style more than the V8 mid-engine sports cars. I currently own a 550 (after owning both a 360 and 430) and really like the 550's design and overall "image" on the road.

Also, look at some of the older Ferrari designs. A Dino, Daytona, or 330 GTC might be something to consider. The good thing about Ferraris is that there are many different types out there - but all of them are exciting. Something for everybody.

    You should own both.

you can buy a used Boxster S for $15K and drive it into the ground.

Keep the 360 drive it weekends and for fun.

Oh, and as you know, there is no comparison on the cars, two completely different animals.

I went through a similar revelation about my F430 and decided the color was an attributing factor. My thread is either still on the first page or on the second pgae of this forum.

Those posters who did the knee-jerk "how can you compare a Ferrari to a Boxster" thing need to open up a little. When I first drove an F430, I thought it reminded me of a Boxster S (987 edition) and for good reason: both are mid-engined. But of course the Boxster S is de-tuned with an underpowered engine, done cynically by Porsche to prevent any challenges to the 911 in its model lineup.

Bottom line: look into changing car colors, getting a full-front clear bra (or both-- getting a car wrap), and drive your 360 to work each day.

I understand having to keep a low profile with clients, I do the same however nothing will drive or be the total experience an F Car is.

I guess what confuses me is what is the difference between a boxster and a ferrari? both are similar cars in terms of daily driveability..

it's not like you are considering going from an ferrari to X5.. they both have similar capabilities..

this is an odd change up..

I do agree to a point. It really comes down to how much I can get out and drive the 360. Just went for a cruise and it is hard to deny the feeling, performance and soul of the car. For me, as a sales rep for a medical device company, there is just no way in hell I can take to this work. Aside from the random parking spots available at any given hospital, it would be looked down like you can't believe if this car was spotted in the lot. Of all the hospitals I goto there is not one Fcar in even the physician lots, let alone the visitor spaces. Previous threads has easily said drive the car, enjoy it, don't worry about the perception of the car, etc., but for me I just can't use this car for work.

I've had 3 previous Boxsters and on each used them pretty much daily in the spring-fall and put between 35-60K on each of them with no issues other than the usual oil changed, scheduled maintenance and tires. I'm not at all trying to compare these two cars in performance, fun factor, wow factor or anything else. All I am trying to figure out is would I have more fun in a Boxster S only because I would use it all the time. Of course I understand the specialness of having a fun car, weekend car and something that gets used occasionally. Make is all the more special driving the 360 because it is not an every day thing.

Sorry for the rambling. I didn't expect the board to say "ditch the Fcar and get a Boxster" but rather wanted to see if anyone else when through the same feelings of getting a more low key car that would be used more often.

Thanks for listening! Gotta go clean the brake dust off the rims!

    John

I wrote something a ways back about a track moded miata I drove, and I had a blast, and trust me I am 30 years past my prime in my skills when I raced, but I'm pretty sure that 90% of the owners on this board could not keep up me in that car on most tracks, and before you all jump up and say whatever, it is no insult you your cars, it more a statement of how you drive them. In that Miata I would drive without a care (I tend to do that anyway scared the crap out of the guys at Algar) and if I put it into a wall, big deal. I can not speak for all owners but I have run into enough who cars never get past 70mph, and get cleaned as soon as they drive for 5 miles. To really enjoy cars like these take the damn traction control off and drive like the car was supposed to be driven, if your afraid, uncomfortable, not sure you can handle it, well then get something you can drive like that. That's how to get enjoyment from these machines (forget the soul crap, they are machines). I'm sure some might take offence by what I said, but if I'm going to own them, I'm going to drive them.
