I think the time has come to finally let the majority of my collection go. I'm at a place right now where, although I really enjoy *collecting* models, I don't seem to get much enjoyment out of having them. The last 5 or 6 models I've purchased have come straight out of the shipping box and into the closet. That just doesn't seem right... Add to that the fact that I have so little space for actually displaying them, that continuing to increase the size of my collection seems a bit ridiculous.

All of the expensive models I have still have the original packaging, but many of the less-expensive HW and Kyosho models are boxless. If boxes aren't your top priority, there's a good chance that I could have something you're interested in that you could save a few bucks on.

I know that the appropriate place to sell items on FChat is FerrariAds, and I plan to do so, along with maybe eBay. I just thought I would let my fellow collectibles "buddies" know ahead of time so that you can have first crack at anything without having to deal with bidding, eBay, etc.

Here's a brief list of what I'll most likely have for sale (in 1/18):

    Exoto 312T (Lauda) w/ driver in-car
    Exoto 312T2 (Lauda) no driver
Exoto 312T4 (Villeneuve) USGP East (driver w/ umbrella)
Exoto 641/2 (Mansel) no driver; misspelled "Goodyear Eagel" on tires
Exoto 641/2 (Prost) Standox "Monza Red" paint
Exoto 312B (Andretti) GP South Africa -- *AUTOGRAPHED*
CMC 250 SWB - NIB, opened once only to ensure no damage in shipping
    Kyosho Lamborghini Countach LP500 - white/white, NIB
Kyosho 365 GTB/4 Competizione - displayed, but have box
Kyosho 328 GTB - red, minor damage (mirrors, spoiler broken off) - no box
Kyosho 308 GTB (early, Euro) - yellow, no box
Kyosho 512BB - red, RF tire broke off in shipping, I re-glued...not perfect, but great for sitting on a shelf
Kyosho 365 GTB/4 Daytona - black, no box, *perfect*
HW 288 GTO - no box
    HW F40 - no box
HW Enzo (yellow) - no box
HW 250 Cal Spyder - no box
HW 250 GT Lusso - no box
HW 333SP "raced" - no box
HW 250 GTO "raced" - no box
HW 250 LM "raced" - no box
HW 355 Challenge "raced" - no box
HW 360 Challenge "raced" - NIB, also include autographed picture of real car by driver Steve Earle
HW 550 Barchetta (red) - no box
HW 430 Coupe - no box
HW Challenge Stradale - no box
HW 355 Spyder - light blue w/ cream interior - no box
    HW 166MM - no box
HW 246 GTS - NIB, never opened
    HW 512M - NIB
    HW 550 Maranello - NIB
    HW 612 Scaglietti - NIB
HW 250 GTO - NIB, minor shelf wear on box, never opened
HW C6 Corvette - red, NIB
HW C6 Corvette - silver, NIB
    HW Porsche 996 GT3 - NIB
Jouef 330P4 - green, no box, missing spare tire

...there are more, but that's all I can get to for now. I'm also considering selling my 1/43 333SPs (I believe I have 5-6) and a BBR 1/43 kit of a 275 GTB/4.

This is going to take some time, but I thought I would give you guys the far-advanced notice for "dibs" in the event you want something. Take care, all...

Surprising news. You strike me as one of the more fanatical collectors in here.

Are you giving up collecting completely? Go for 1:43, it takes much less space! :D

Hi there, I am fairly new here, especially to this section because I have only just started to collect (after reading some of the posts here). I am interested in the 1/43's you have. Please PM me about the price and condition of them when you are ready to sell. I am sure you won't have any trouble finding a good buyer for any of your cars though.
    Thanks, SiVan

I agree... I never thought I'd sell these models, but I think it's just the right thing to do right now. It's complicated, and I won't bore everybody with my thoughts, but I'm okay with it. If/when I do get back into collecting, it'll most likely be in 1/43 because, like you said, it takes much less space. The downside is that decent models are usually more expensive than their 1:18 counterpart!

    SiVan,
I don't know if you'll remember, but I believe we met in February up in Stockton on the Henry Tran Memorial Cruise. I was the one with the 1979 308 GT4.

    Hi Aaron,

Sorry to hear that you are selling. It's hard to part with something that's meaningful. But I think you'll find some real gems in the 1/43 world. In any event you have a pm

    Regards,

    Lawrence

Hi Aaron, of course! now I remember! You have a really nice 308GT4! I just didn't remember your FCHAT handle. Hope everything is going well for you. I know how you must feel about giving up some of your collection. I gave up a nice collection of stamps when I was little, and several years ago I had to get rid of most of my bonsai collection (because of my growing car habits!), and I am still regreting it ever since. You'd better think twice about giving up your collection!
I have only a few die-cast models, including some really nice Porsche 1/43's, but because of this forum, I am really getting hooked on the Ferrari's 1/43 models. I don't plan on having more than just about 50 cars though, just enough for the existing shelf space in my room. You just can't keep up with all the models that are coming out every year! So I am not even going to try.
    Nice to hear from you!

Just thought I would also mentioned, as I already have to a few of you via PM, that I'm MORE than happy to snap pictures of any model(s) you're interested in. Just shoot me a PM with your email address and the pictures you'd like, and I'll try to take care of it ASAP. It would probably be easier than trying to post that many pictures on FChat and keep track of everything...

    Take care -

Aaron...! Think about what you're doing...! Don't sell...! Seriously, rethink this whole thing... If space is your problem, then sell something else - the couch, for instance :) - but don't sell your models... How many countless hours have you spent looking, searching, poking around, sniffing out, hunting down and otherwise scrounging up models...? How many times have you completely messed up the shelves in Toys R Us, Target, Wal-Mart, K B Toys and other places, looking to see if they had one - just one - model you'd add to your collection...?

Don't do it, buddy... Don't do it...

    Carbon,
The words you speak are so true... So, so true my friend. While space is one "problem", it's not the sole reason for the sale. To avoid a long and drawn out story, I just think "it's time."

I totally understand how you feel Aaron. I've about 120 models now. When I had like 10 models, I was overjoyed whenever the next one landed up on my doorstep .. I would look at it from all angles, open every openable device (pretty sad huh?). Of late though, I've noticed that the collecting has become mechanical. I seem to be more interested in the hunt for a model than looking at it when it is here.

But then again, occasionally I take a model out of my bookcase and keep it on my PC monitor to look at it. :)

Will you be getting rid of the model your wife brought from Italy?

It is gratifying that these models hold their value reasonably well - so I am not too concerned with spending money on them. :) Think of it like male jewelry as an investment :)

    Sorry to hear that Aaron.

I must admit I had some similar thoughts. Once you go past the 100 car threshold, the appeal starts to change. For now I'm holding on to the cars and I will always collect the racing models, particularly the F1 cars. But I'm not so sure about the street cars anymore. Why even bother with showcasing a 612? :(

OTOH I'm thinking about my dream car garage where one entire wall would be a gigantic showcase for all the cars. How neat would that be?

I know 1/43 will not do it for me, simply too small for my taste. I can't get over the toy stigma, even if it is built by BBR. Modern 1/32 slot cars are a good compromise: Not as big, not as small and tremendous detail and you can even race them. But for me I keep that a separate collection.

Don't sell. Store them for later when you suddenly realise you didn't want to sell them after all. When they're gone, they're gone.

    Ditto.

Maybe your current willingness to part with the collection comes from the current high tide in 1/18 HW models coming out. But 5 new HW F40s don't equal 1 Exoto 365 Boxer. Some models remain sparse and collectable. And in ten years somebody would probably be even happy for another HW Enzo. Just look at the ridiculous money some F1 cars from a few years back are achieving on ebay today.

    I just say it again:

1:18 are the toys, not 1:43.

Simple conclusion: Aaron has finally outgrown 1:18. 1:43 is the answer!

    :D

(BTW, on the F40 Competizion subject (you know), the MakeUp wins it by miles).

It all depends what you grew up with. For me 1:43 scale is more like the scale of Matchbox toys and 1:18 is more like the Tamiya kits you had to build for display only. So to me bigger is less toy like.

For someone who grew up with Bburago or Hot Wheels 1:18 will consider those more toy like than for example a 1:43 BBR, Redline etc.

Nowadays you have detailed cars as well as toys in all scales. So there's no definitive answer to what is the better choice. Each to his own.

(I did see your smiley, so don't take this too seriously either ;)

Of course, but the criterium of 'toy-like' isn't subjective, since in the business of modelling, the standard of high quality handbuilt, is 1:43, not 1:18.

1:18 are far more suited to be handled as toys as well. Theyre not fixated to any base, they usually have opening doors and working steering. You actually CAN play with them, which is not the case for most handbuilt 1:43's, since they are meant for displaying purposes only. If there are opening doors, they are usually fixed (so not to be closed).

And finally, surely no one would mistake any BBR, AMR, Feeling43, Tecnomodel etc. for a toy??

Having said that, I have no problem with people prefering 1:18 over 1:43, allthough I will never understand why, and I don't understand people calling handbuilt 1:43's more toylike than your average Hotwheels piece of .... well, lets just end it here. (not saying that this is what Andreas is saying, but I didn't understand the critizism on the Make Up F40 Competizione, when I saw the pics of the 1:18 "Pilot").
