Any problems cross-posting this to rennlist or similar?
OK, not all of the roads west of I35W suck but a bunch do. However Carolyn and I and the Ferrari badged Explorer managed to ferret out some hum-dingers. We are going out this weekend to see if we can add to the front end of the route which should make it about 60 miles total. I will say this about this years run-MAKE SURE YOUR BRAKES ARE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. There are a couple of slam down turns that if you do not negotiate correctly you will be having a conversation with the home owner in their living room. The first part of the run is pretty layed back, the second section is part undulating and part roller coaster and the third part is just a nice drive to the drop off spot. For those who wish to excercise your vehicles you need to pay very close attention to not only what you are doing but what others do! For those who wish to do a nice cruise you will enjoy some very nice scenery and some absolutely gorgeous houses. Once we finalise the route I will give everybody the start location and then start counting the group. Thanks to all of you.
Carolyn and I and the Mazda spent about 5 hours working out some logistics today. We were going to try to add to the first section of the route, but as usual we kept bumping into pretty decent roads that had a 1/4 mile of tar and shale or a 1/4 mile of no road. In any event we augmented the last part of the run with some new and interesting roads. As I stated in an earlier post there are some severe turns-there are three turns with a 10 mph signs on them and from 20 mph the Mazda was getting some tire squeal. We ran one road in one direction and then ran it in the opposite direction and on the way back there was a car in the ditch by one of these turns! Again make sure your brakes are in good shape. The start location is the parking lot in front of the clubhouse which is in front of the west terrace tower at Texas Motor Speedway. When you enter the speedway from the east entrance off of 114 continue past Victory Lane Circle then take the next left (there is a huge parking lot on the right) and you will see the blue clubhouse. Pull in there parking is available for about 35 cars. Again this year we will be coordinating with a Fire Dept. so we will drop off our contributions there. I am meeting with them at the first of next week and I will get a list of what they need or would like as far as toys are concerned. The spot for lunch is about 5 miles from the fire station and we have arranged to have either the back part of one of the rooms or the complete east room depending on the number of people who will be attending. Things are looking very good, I hope we have a great turn out and some excellent weather!
On Saturday Carolyn and I finalized the route. It takes 1 hour and some change to run it at the speed limit and slightly above. It is right at 42 miles. I hope to hear from the Fire Dept. early this week in respect to specific toys needed-as soon as I find out I will make a post. I am going to post a list of the people who said that they will make it off of page 1 and 2. I am interested in the number of cars so that I can make sure we have enough maps to go around and to get an idea for parking at the restaurant. Garrick-on or in something Jim E. Steve F. Hi Don- Please put me down as a yes. Also, I mentioned the toy run to Doug at American Garageworks (he just finished our 'extreme garage makeover') and he said he would be happy to bring his truck/enclosed trailer along to help carry the toy load. You can reach him at 817.219.1455. Thanks in advance for organizing - we had a great turnout last year! Frances
I really enjoyed this event last year and would like to participate again, but I don't see a start time. Maybe I've just missed it. Can anybody help me out?
I talked to the Fire Department today and they are going to make a pretty big deal out of this. They are very excited about this event so i hope we have a great turn out. The toy donations should be for grades 1 thru 6, there are no specific requests so take that into consideration. We will run the route this weekend in the Ferrari badged Ferrari to see what the roads are really like. There have been some questions about the start time, it will be 9:30 AM from the lot at TMS. This will be 9:30 sharp as i am working on another aspect of the run and that will put us on a pretty short teather. Here is the upgraded list. If you know of anyone else please invite them.
