Major new Ferrari themed project in Abu Dhabi - Exclusive development agreement between Ferrari and ALDAR

Maranello and Abu Dhabi, 14th November - Ferrari and ALDAR Properties have today announced an exclusive agreement to develop an innovative and exciting Ferrari Concept in Abu Dhabi themed around the prestigious and renowned Ferrari brand.

The development will provide entertainment for the whole family and the initial concept envisages a race track, numerous rides and attractions, an opportunity to allow visitors to learn the story and history of Ferrari, to participate in Ferrari motoring activities, and to experience the Ferrari brand also through virtual simulations. Another important feature of the facility will be an advanced and sophisticated circuit where tests and driving courses will be organised, as well as races.

The concept will also include hotels, retail, residential and hospitality elements embracing the design ethics of the Ferrari brand.

Making the announcement, ALDAR's Chairman Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh said: "Mubadala's purchase of Ferrari shares earlier this year allowed ALDAR an opportunity to forge a relationship with one of the world's leading brands. We are delighted that this opportunity has swiftly progressed into an exclusive agreement, which has arisen from the natural synergy of ideologies and objectives between Ferrari and ALDAR. This relationship will allow ALDAR to create an exciting destination within Abu Dhabi which offers something for the entire family and underlines the already strong relationship between the Ferrari Brand and the UAE."

Mr Al Sayegh concluded: "To this end, we have immediately commenced our design programme, so that we can launch the development to the world very early next year. The development will be then be constructed on a fast track, targeting a public opening in 2008."Commenting on the announcement, Jean Todt Ferrari's Director General said "The agreement with Abu Dhabi offers Ferrari many opportunities: the site will be an important attraction for fans and car lovers worldwide, whilst the structures for sportive and driving activities will have a special appeal for all Ferrari enthusiasts and pilots".

Giulio Zambeletti, Brand Development and Partners Director of Ferrari added: "Ferrari products and stores are having a great success worldwide; hence the confirmation of the enormous potential that our brand can inspire. Ferrari and ALDAR are working together with a team of professionals from all over the world, on a project that will be a dream come true."

"We are extremely excited and honoured to be working with Ferrari on what will be a world class development," added Christopher Sims, ALDAR's CEO.

"We have engaged the world's leading designers and creative talents to ensure that this great project will be worthy of the Ferrari and ALDAR brands. When completed it will significantly add to Abu Dhabi's tourism offering - without doubt it will make the Emirate a destination of choice within the region, as well as providing a strong and profitable income base for ALDAR's balanced and diversified real estate portfolio."

What's disgraceful about it? Ferrari is already so engrossed in marketing, that theme parks and the like are no suprise. As to the Mid-East connection, it's probably, per capita, the best customer base in the world. That is, if you only count sheiks.

This could have the potential to be pretty funny, though. could you imagine a theme park filled with people wearing licensed Ferrari mechandise? It's enough to make you go buy a Lambo!

I'm afraid it's the F1 influence showing....they can build an entire new facility instead of using time honored venues in the US or UK........sad, I know but reality.......

Ahh.....a theme park with theme parking, had to happen.

With 20% of the world’s oil reserves almost under the race track I can sort of see the logic for this example of marketing gone mad.

I'm only gonna go if I can have shields on my roller coaster car. Otherwise, forget it.
    Sheesh! talk about 'Ferrari lifestyle'!
Aside: Bubba, that Daytona seat comment is way good.

Us "Wide Spread Attention Giftedness" guys are ALWAYS thinking outside the box.........

Plus they just closed Houston Texas' park, land underneath got too valuable, so the surplus equipment concept was right there!!!

Then, there was the recent Texas Monthly article about the State Fair ferris wheel malfunction and fatality (long ago) so it was just all "in there"...bubbling along..

I personally can't generate much outrage over Ferrari branding anymore.......I can remember when they just made cool cars and the rare jacket or hat.

turning Ferrari into a brand name for marketing purposes would hurt, rather than help. What long term Ferrari lover wants a Ferrari Walmart?

Hard to imagine enough people making the place a success. Theme parks require a huge amount of traffic to make it profitable. Even Disney has gone downhill in the last few years because of decreased attendance. Less maintenance, not as stirling as it once was. It would be sad to see Ferrari lose its luster by being associated with a poorly maintained theme park. At least no visitor will act surprised when one of the attractions stops working due to electrical problems!

There would have to be a McDonald's on-site, for me to even consider it. And I don't want any 'falafel' burger, either.

Do you think, with all the extra money they'll be making from this, that they'll begin manufacturing some of the old, impossible to find parts again? That would be nice...

If bettering the brand was an issue they would work all the kinks out of the cars before they shipped the first unit, not five years into a model.

I could swear I heard about this project being built in Dubai a few months back; why they've chosen to build it in Abu Dhabi instead is a bit of a mystery.

For anyone who actually is thinking of visiting this place if and when it's finished, a little advice:

1)Wait until you read that it is in fact open before you book a flight. Not opening soon, or opening on a certain date. Projects run late here, and more so in Abu Dhabi than Dubai.

    B) When you come, fly into Dubai and make a day trip to Abu Dhabi to visit. While you can just about have a nice week or two in Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a hole and overnight is too long to stay there. Best of all is to make the UAE a stopover on the way to someplace really nice like the Maldives.

And yes, if you come, come in the short window between the time it opens and the time it goes to pieces from lack of maintenance. Hard to judge, because when it first opens half the park will not be finished, and a year after it opens half the park will be closed down for maintenance that will never happen. And of course you won't be told in either case until you have bought your ticket and are through the gate.

    You have been warned.

edit to add: No Dubai doesn't have oil, Abu Dhabi has all the oil, but according to the BBC special I saw last week Dubai is the fastest growing city in the world. It's really the ONLY place in the region to live, or was until they doubled the price of everything over the past year. I've ben here 9 years, and my wife has been here since 1983. Still a nice place to live, but not as nice as it used to be. More crowded and expensive now.
