O.K. since I own or have owned both Mercedes and Rolls Royce, can answer. Simple everything is better on a Rolls Royce; the leather, the plastic switches, the wood work, even the carpets are above Mercedes in quality. Even against the Maybach, Rolls was just better in the luxury department. Paint fit and finish well above as well. The drive is also more luxurious as well. In terms of ride, the Rolls is way smoother, period. Everything on the Rolls is zero effort. If you ever put a Rolls in gear, you know what I mean. In fact the gear selector can move too easily in my opinion. Mercedes are off the rack Hugo boss, the Rolls is a made to measure!
Zudnic, that's not my point. What does does a Rolls DO better than a Merc? Yes there are better materials. Yes, the leather smells nicer. Yes, there are stylistic and other elements that justify the price difference, but as a means of conveyance, its basically the same. Yes, it makes you feel better. My point is exactly what you pointed out ... There are many reasons that this will appeal to folks over a Rover or an Audi SUV. whether that be status symbol or because the leather is nicer ... They will sell. A lot. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
It does everything better then a Merc or even Maybach. It drives better, its truly a zero effort car. O.K. in driving terms for the driver its not a fun car to drive. But in passenger comfort and luxury it has no equal.
... Perhaps the new Maserati Levante is the obvious solution for people that feel (and I 100% agree) like you: Maserati Levante review - still want that Cayenne? | Evo
It has reached Australia... and the first review is in... Bentley Bentayga: Australia release, specs, price
Same as zudnic advised, I too have and have had prior RRs and Benzs. As a matter of fact just acquired an 85 SL380 this morning. Nothing compares to driving an RR for luxury. At the same time nothing compares to an E or S class for regular daily driving. It is different strikes for different folks or days or occasions. On a personal level, I just don't like how the current bentleys look. But WTF, $300,000 for a dash clock! And instead of jacking up the price by say $5,000 they nickle and dime by charging $1,000 for auto trunk motion release and $15,000. (Approx for active cruise control). You can buy a basic ford or Subaru for $30k which includes all that and the usual collision avoidance system. I just don't understand their marketing strategy. I would not get one because I would be afraid to take it out incase someone stole the $300,000 clock!
After lots of thought, I am disappointed in the exterior looks of the Bentayga. It looks like a tarted up Toureg/Q7/Cayenne. If you're going to spend a quarter million on an SUV, it should look better than the same SUV whih shares the same platform for a fifth of the price. For me, there are only two good looking ultra-luxury SUVs left: The Range Rover Autobiography and the Mercedes-Benz G63/G65. The Bentley exterior looks like a tarted up Toureg. 100% in agreement. My wife just switched from Autobiography to G63 (alternates these cars every 2 years)
A Mercedes is a quality car. The higher end is designed to be a buy it once and use forever kind of deal. German engineering was better technology, but it was also a last forever deal. Lexus was pure trying to be luxurious with Toyota reliability. The fact is Mercedes dealer service is expensive because they fix things before its a problem. You buy an S class and do all the dealer service and inspections. 30 years later a bumper has rust bubbles they'll replace it under warranty. You don't get that with a Toyota/Lexus!
