    In good measure!
    We have the most reliable Ferraris on this site.
    We hear about valve seals (F355)
    We hear about differentials blowing up (Testarossa)
    We hear about cats (F430)
    And then we have our 550/575
    We talk about Sunvisor fixes and sticky buttons and the best tires currently available.
    I know it’s boring but let’s face it there is nothing like starting your car and knowing it’s going to start and perform like a true Ferrari without a CEL going off or blowing up like in the movie like The Godfather
    Hopefully I didn’t just jinx any of us now

    It took me only a year to fix/refresh my 60k miles 550 when I bought it, wrenching on it only on my spare time on weekends. Did all the known issues - CAT ECUs, fuel pump mounts, fuseboard, external fan harness, sticky buttons, lower cam drive bearings. I also did the clutch with master cylinder, all fluids (engine oil several times), cleaned injectors, center plenum gasket, throttle cable, TB synchronization, lumbar support fix, bumpers adjustment, tyres, upgraded later style door pins, Fabio's double H-pipe, and other small things I cannot remember.
    I was so surprised and perhaps a little even "disappointed" that the whole journey was such a breeze that this no-BS 550 somehow encouraged me to add a supposedly "fussy" F355 to the stable, but the bloody damn thing has so far also been as much of a smooth experience (ok, replacing the headers on the RHS with the engine in place was the only tricky bit so far). Now I clearly don't consider myself a master mechanic by any mean as I have been doing nothing but performing basic replacement tasks but it irks me a little to hear many folks moaning about how "special" these cars are and how fussy maintaining them can get when, in my opinion, most is issues are caused by a lack of use. Want to boast about having a Ferrari in the garage but not put up with the maintenance for the necessary and regular use the car requires? Buy another car or keep your money in the bank but please don't buy an "old" Ferrari and spread myths all over the place.

    Anyway, the 550 can't stop to impress me in how easy it is to live with and to maintain despite its exotic status, and goes on to show that Ferrari during the 1990s knew how to put together very special cars that are now showing their durability and dependability. There is hope that such history will repeat itself when what I call a cycle of global simplification will eventually encourage Ferrari (and other sports car manufacturers) to quit the pipe dream of technical perfection through the excessive use of electronics and build cars closer to what most people are - mostly reliable but with imperfections that contribute to their characters and where performing basic tasks such as replacing the battery does not require a degree in aerospace engineering.

    Anyway, long live our 456s and 550s.
