The service records show that during the $8000 engine out major, they did not change the tensioner bearings because they looked to be in good shape. I thought that this was a must for a major service. Also, funny to see that Auto Gallery misspelled their own address on their work order: "Canooga Park"

I agree with you - I could care less what shape my tensioner bearings are in when it comes time for the major, they are going to be replaced with new ones.

I haven't done a major yet, but when I was speaking with several shops trying to decide which one and here is what one told me: "We take out the bearings, give them a spin in our hands, if they are in good shape we can re-use them - we will call you in and you can see and decide for yourself if you want us to re-use or replace". While I respect that they are giving me the opition, this is not what I want to hear, I am paying big bucks for these guys to do the job because I THOUGHT THEY KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING, WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW ABOUT TENSIONER BEARINGS TO MAKE SUCH A DECISON. Needless to say, I will not be using them for my major.

Perhaps I am mistaken and tensionere bearings can or cannot be replaced as opposed to absolutely should be replaced on each major service, maybe an expert can give their opinion here? Rifledriver/David Helms/Ernie, etc....

They probably have lots of customers ask over and over or complain if they replace stuff that "looks new" so it's just become policy to not replace them. I'm sure if you tell them, replace the bearings they will not try to talk you out of it.

That is not really the point. They are the experts and you SHOULD be able to rely on their expertise. I do not go to the Doctor so I can tell him what to do. You pay them for what they know, not what they do.

In the old days on the 308's we used our judgement and often reused them. The cars were simple, if a bearing went bad later we went in and replaced it. It was no big deal. For someone with ANY level of expertise or period of experience we have come to know the bearings will go the life of the belts with a very tiny expectation of trouble. The expectation of trouble goes up astronomically on a second set of belts. On a 355 that means the motor comes out again and that is if you are lucky enough to hear the bearing before outright failure.

I have reused bearings in circumstances where the car sat for a very long period and needed belts due to age but had very few miles. Outside of those circumstances it would be my opinion that anyone not changing bearings at the belt replacement, especially on a 355, 348, TR etc, does so from ignorance and their ability to perform other aspects of the job properly should come into question.

My personal experience is there are alot of "experts" who may know what they are doing technically, but they use thier expertise more for your disadvantage than advantage.
