as a 550 owner (1997 version) and have owned it since 2006 I was interested to see the 550 coming up for auction at Members Meeting next week

Bonhams : 2002 Ferrari 550 Maranello Coupé Chassis no. ZFFZR49C000125187 Engine no. 62178

what made me litraly spit out my tea was reading the description ".....The car has had only three previous keepers, although one is the deceased (the current registered keeper is his wife) so effectively only two."

so when I die and my wife inherits the car (along with a few other cars) the number of owners will go down ??

If enough owners die the car will be brand new with factory miles! :D

Edit: And BTW, thank goodness it was only tea and not an expensive scotch.

    I would read that as:

The car had two previous owners who actually owned and drove the car, the second having now deceased, and the car passed on to his wife.

The wife has had the car registered in her name (making her the third registered keeper of the car), to give her the legal right to sell the car (in the UK, this simplifies the process of selling a car after a bereavement).

It may well be the case that although the car was registered to the wife, she never drove it, and is selling it immediately.

So technically, the car has had three previous keepers, but in reality, there are only two actual previous keepers - The third keeper being merely a paper exercise to facilitate selling the car.

Look at this from a reverse point of view:

A dealer buys a one owner car outright from a seller, and puts it into their stock to sell on.

The car goes from being the original owners car, to being the dealers car (so they now own the car - It's their property to sell)

You come along and buy the car - Are you the second owner, or the third owner?

Technically, you're the third owner ( 1st owner:The original owner / 2nd owner :The dealer/ 3rd owner: you), but the dealer doesn't register it in their name, so the paperwork states that you're the second owner.

In the case of the Bonhams Ferrari 550, the wife is like a dealer who has registered the car in their name - She becomes a registered keeper of the car, even though she did nothing with it.

So the car shows three registered keepers, but it has actually only really had two. :)
