I went camping with some friends this last weekend and my running shoes got muddy - I don't have any hiking boots. Calling on all the wisdom of F-chat, can they be washed in a washing machine without damaging the shoes?

    Probably.

Just don't put them in the microwave to dry them off (a friend did this once, needless to say a new microwave was in order).

You can. Avoid warm water and dryer. The sole will come off if you don't.

So then, cold water to wash and then air dry? Thanks for the quick replies.

BTW, it wouldn't be my washing machine. It's one at my college... ;)

I used a dryer for mine, they were fine. I still wear them, no sole problems... that was over a month ago (at least)

My old dryer had a rack that you put in to dry things flat. I used to use that for my shoes. My new dryer doesnt have that but I still put my shoes in there. I use low heat. I have had no problems.

A friend of mine put his shoes in the oven to dry them. The shoes melted and he had to get another oven b/c when he would cook the kitchen would smell like melted rubber. I wanted to get the old oven to use for powder coating but he threw it out.

I just cleaned mine by spraying down with Simple Green, scrubbing with a plastic bristle brush and rinsing with a hot water spray. Air dry afterwards.
