They're not very quick, but as a Ferrari to use every day and not care too much about it could be a good buy. The main reason not to buy one is that significantly faster Mondials don't cost that much more, especially when the considering the overall running costs.

I love mine, and it now has 450hp :D

the early yrs have the basic k-jet, no lambda feedback so keep an eye in the exhaust temps. heavy car low power until the 't'. I don't know where costs sit on this model these days but they have been historically lower than the 308/328's. reliability is good due to fuel injection and as always condition of car.

loads of space compared to the 2 seaters and a good sized trunk, I have taken the family on a 1200mile trip with it with luggage for 4, 2kids.

It is a terrific, usable and relatively reliable handbuilt small Italian Grand Tourismo automobile with a wonderful drivetrain and chassis. It is a fun car that is a challenge and a hoot to drive - it will make you a better driver. It's also still straightforward enough where the owner can do the maintenence.
With the Mondial, it is all about balance.

    Have fun!

What he said, plus the aesthetics improved over the production run.

I agree with everyone so far too.

Inexpensive, dependable if taken care of and not bad looking. If it checks out, buy it and enjoy it. Just don't try to beat any minivans loaded with kids and a soccer mom stoplight to stoplight cause you ain't gonna.

    I'd look for a 3.2 or 3.4 (T), more power.

Also, the ragtop is more fun!
Especially in Cali, where you'll get to use it.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Cheers

He's already got a 355, so I suppose he's looking for a second Ferrari for more sedate and everyday use. Given the current stable, the Mondial 8 makes sense subject to my earlier caveat about faster Mondials for not much more money.

I would be tempted to bide my time waiting for that really good Mondial 8 whose value is kept low due to the model rather than the condition. This is certainly the strategy I adopted in buying a 208 GT4, though in the end I did end up trading up to a 308. But then it's my only Ferrari.

If you don't mind the lack of performance, there is the potential to get a much better Mondial 8 for the money than there is a 3.2 or QV but you may have to hunt for a good one.

I have an 1981 and I love my Mondial. Kind of Low on power. But the sound of the engine makes up for it.

My 1983 911 had 180 hp. My 944 had 145 hp. My Mondial only has 205hp but it feels faster.

Good luck with your new Mondial

That's exactly how I felt about my 208 GT4. You get more of the noise, more of the time! Whereas in the faster models you get a brief blat followed by lots of time slowing down.

speaking from experience here, in stock form my mondi was slower than most new cars but TONS of fun, you could rip thru all 3 gears to redline and not worry about breaking any speed laws. lots of noise and great balance. now with double the power it's almost too fast, you go thru gears very quick and approach the arrest me speeds light years ahead of stock.

I LOVE the power addition but there are times where i miss the noise from going slower. odd I know, but highway driving is much easier now with the ability to pass. having driven in both nor and so cal in both iterations the extra power is useless in traffic and most any time on the 405/5/55/57/10/60/110/101/22 etc.. freeways.

being a power junkie i'll most likely never go back :D

I had an 82 Mondial 8 for a few years. I traded it for an 86 TR. The TR was only 4 years newer but felt like 20 years in engineering terms. The early Mondials have their share of issues.

I really like the aesthetic of the early car (non color matched bumper) more than the later years. However, given the price of 456's I feel a Mondial 8 is a hard sell as its only available as a coupe.

    Best,
    dsd

Thanks for all the replies, I am looking for a coupe of some sort and it doesn't have to be a rocket...............I have 3 rockets already!

The price's seem relatively low for a V-8 Ferrari and I really do like the looks. Maybe I should step up to a 85 or newer for a little more juice.

    Thanks again

Ooops, sorry JLP, should have looked at your profile b/f posting.
I would have seen you already have a ragtop.

    No interest in the GT4?

I agree. I have a Mondial 8. Kind of slow from 0-60, but once moving, plenty fast enough for me.
