I've always prepared my own taxes, but I had a lot going on in 2010 so I want to hire a professional to prepare my return this year. What are your thoughts on going with a chain (i.e. HR Block) vs. a more expensive independent shop?

I don't think my situation is too unique - just some investment K-1s, consulting business income, in addition to standard employment wages.

    Thanks

If you must go with "chain" - Jackson Hewitt.

Do yourself a favor and hire an accountant with a law degree as well. In my own experience, tax attorneys maximize your return and/or limit your tax liability the most effectively. Personally, I would never go to a large chain company as I feel like the one's that would actually be doing the work are people who I would not want working on my case.

Find someone who is used to dealing with K-1's and other non-W-2 type income/expense items. Most of the chain places won't be able to handle anything but plain vanilla returns. Don't be penny-wise pound-foolish.
