Fellow F-chatters, I'm a current 308 owner looking to move on to a 328. I've been investigating them for a while, and like with 308s, many of them have issues, some are misrepresented, etc. I'm looking for a fair price on a strong 328, and wanted to see if anyone had any information on this one. It's being sold through Premier Sports Cars Co. in Missouri (website: http://www.premiercars.com/). Here's the car: http://www.premiercars.com/details.php?Stock_Number=2569 VIN: ZFFXA20A4H0067021 Cosmetically, it looks inline with a pretty good 328. I don't have any pictures of the engine bay, though. Carfax reports three owners. The car spend some 10k miles and 5 years in New York before going to Illinois--is the Northeast location a big concern (rust, wear and tear)? Anyone in Springfield care to have a look for me? --Mike
Premier provides a carfax on the car on their website (see above link). Here's the text from the carfax... No issues, looks like three owners, and the mileage history doesn't raise any suspiscions. I think that car is from MA. It was on ebay for a while and didn't sell up here. Premeir bought it from the owner for under $40k, maybe $38.5-39K and put a little into it, new tires etc.. If that is the car that I'm thinking about (I'm pretty sure it is since it's a 1987 w/ the exact mileage) it seemed looked like a nice car. I saw it while it was at Baystate Motorsports waiting for a truck to pick it up and send it to Premeir. Baystate never owned it, they just held it until it was picked up. The interior looked like it needed to be re-dyed and it needed a really good detailing. Other than that it looked like a good car. I never drove it but was told that it seemed to run strong with no known problems. I hope this info helps. $50k seems a bit much for that car though seeing as how my brother could have had it for $40k from the original owner. Good Luck.
Thanks for the information, Jamie! I agree 50k is high for this car, and would expect them to move a bit on that price for a serious buyer. What do they need to make to make it worth their while anyway, $5,000? --Mike
I know Premier, the guy is partners or affiliated with Mike Willhoit, IIRC. They used to share showroom space or something. That's were I bought mine! Springfield, Missouri.
But your brother DIDN'T get it at $40K, so now it's more!! Geeez. Quit giving Mike a hard time, yesterday's price is yesterday! You don't like the one with 300 miles, Mike??? That son of a B!tch don't need no stinkin' detailing, I can tell ya that, just throw the tacky embroidered floor mats in the dumpster and haul as$ for home!!! Drop by the house, I'll loan ya some road tunes!!!
Geez Speedy, take it easy. I'm just telling him what the car was going for about a month ago... correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think and '87 328 appreciated over $10k in a month. Of course Premeir is expected to make money on the car, that's why they're in business but in my opinion he should be able to buy the car for around $45k. I was just trying to give him as much info on the car as I could. I don't think anyone would mind knowing how much someone is trying to make on them. Yes, obviously a dealer should make a profit on something they're selling but I think a couple grand is more than sufficient and if a buyer feels he got a good deal (assuming the dealer made a couple grand on him instead of $10k+) he'd be more willing to go back to that dealer when the time comes for a newer Ferrari.
Just got off the phone with them. Dick Courtney, nice guy, is calling me back about documentation on the car. They had the 30k service done before they put the car up for sale... The question is WHERE they had it done, and WHAT did they do... (And... DID they adjust the valves!). Also, they bought the car from a guy in Kansas City, Missouri... The car doesn't seem to have any history in Massachusetts... --Mike
well, if that's the case... i have no idea what they paid, how the car is or if it's a good deal!! either way, you should be able to get that car for low to mid $40's even with the 30k service done. pretty strange that they got two of the identical cars, same year, colors (not too strange for a ferrari I guess) and mileage within a month or so of eachother. good luck with it and keep us posted. -Jamie
Are you privy to the actual numbers you are quoting on the Premier purchase??? I looked at two 328GTS, yesterday, one 29,000 miles for $49K. One with 328 miles, for $80K. Everybody here seems to think they are experts, on "what is it worth"! It's a game played on this site everyday. The problem is none of the "Experts" seem to be actually in the market. They are just "Experts"!! No offense intended, I'll switch to decaff now!!
Yes there was a period when every single 328GTS made was red/tan. Us old guys refer to this as The Magnum Effect!!!!! LOL!
Those guys know their Ferraris, I'm sure it was a competent 30K service. A 328 on their lot is at the back of the room, man!!!
Speedy, maybe I should switch to decaf too! If that was the car that they bought from MA I spoke with the owner of the car before they purchased it from him and he said he would take $40k for it. I spoke with him again after Premeir purchased the car and he said that he sold it to them for a little under $40k, I can't remember exactly what, I think it was the $38.5 or $39k that I said earlier. While the car was awaiting a truck and was at Baystate Motorsports they said that they spoke with the guys from Premeir and that they would take $45k for it.
Just be sure you have a PPI done by a well known Ferrari guy... I noticed the Antenna wasn't down all the way, either it wasn't fully retracted or it's bent and needs replacement. Also, i did notice in the pictures the seats may be in need of some help... Pictures never really do it too well, either get some one with a good eye check it over and have a good PPI done. As for what the best price is, it's all up to what you are willing to spend on it. Also, if a good 30k was done on that car, your looking at about $5k there. New tires, maybe another $500-$1000 for that... etc...etc... 328s are great cars, i'm glad i got mine... I know i paid too much for it last year, but, i will get lots of enjoyment out of it in the years to come...
I'm sure that if a buyer walked into Premier with $45k, CASH, and laid it on the hood of the car, it would be sold that minute.......New tires and a 30K service ('lets see the receipt on that.....') would bring a $40K car up to $45K in value.
JamieO, I know the 328 you are talking about. This is not the same car, however it is very similar. Any way as far as price goes assume they did pay $38.5 for the car out of KC when you figure shipping $400 and a belt svc. lets say $1800 min. they will have $40,700 in the car add in the cost of $$$ and overhead and at $45k they are not making a killing. Chuck
I was the previous owner of one of the 328's (from MA) that Premier now has. It is not the one displayed on their website. My (was) serial number was 67181. I sold it to Chris Courtney for $38.5. Initially I listed it on Ferrariads.com and ebay with a price of $42. One potential owner did a PPI on it at Ferrari of New England. It has some minor cam seal leaks so it needed a full 30k service. I have not spoken to premier since. What are they asking for it? The same as the other 328? I thnik $49 is high for any 328. Low to mid 40's is more realistic. Let me know anyone would like more information on it. Theo
Chuck, I agree... at $45k they're not making a killing on the car and I think that's a reasonable price if a full 30k service was done on it, but at the $50k asking price they are. The car I was talking about was Theo's car, that was the car that my brother was interested in and it's the car that I saw at Baystate Motorsports for a few days.
I bought a 328GTS from the same folks about 3 years ago. Car was in pretty reasonable condition with a few minor surprises. There was a shifting problem that wasn't mentioned that I did insist they cover the repair of and after some discussion, they did cover it. These guys are basically a detail shop and their service work is done up the road by another shop. As a side comment, I agree with the other comments, make them a solid offer. Asking prices are just that. I was able to negotiate a considerable amount on the price of mine and I think it's not unreasonable to shoot for something like $46 given the market. Do keep in mind though, if this car is exceptionally clean, it's worth a bit extra. Ask details on any spots where the paint is not original, are there complete service records, and also what exactly was done for the servicing (30K). Oil leaks in trans/engine tire condition brakes/ % life left windows operate freely Also definately make sure all gauges work. My tach quit after about 9 months.. too late to ask them to cover it. Ask all the right questions. As far as dealers go, these guys are okay, but you should also do your homework. The 328 is a great car and I don't regret buying mine. Best of luck. Russ
Hello Alan, I do have a couple buyers close to making a decison but yes the car is still available. Know anyone interested?
Just passing interest, I saw your post of it "over there". LOL! Good Luck. I'm still kicking a '76 glass, hoping someone else will buy it. High miles but it needs a home!!!
Hey Theo! What's up? I hope you are looking ahead to that 355! (Prices are coming down on them). All: I agree that $50K seems a bit high for a 328, but like Speedy says, nobody is an expert on prices. What is a Ferrari worth? Whatever you can get for it. I can't imagine that it costs a lot more to make a BMW than it does to make a Honda, so why do people pay so much more for BMW's? (This is not a flame against BMW, I love BMW, just making an example). People have the perception that BMW is better, therefore worth more. It may or may not be any "better" as cars go (afterall, they both get you there, and the Honda is more reliable) but there is a perception of intangible value. I would offer that one can get a decent idea of what Ferraris are worth based on what they actually SELL for on eBay. Now I know that eBay is often a place to get hosed with a bad car if you aren't careful, but we all know that lots of good cars get sold at fair prices on eBay and this is a way to let the market be the indicator of roughly what things are worth. If you put a 328 on there starting at $10K, you will get lots of bids. If you put it on there at $80K, you will get none. Somewhere in between, the market will tell you what it's worth. In my opinion, nobody is going to get $50K for a 328 on eBay unless it has some extraordinary feature (ejection seats perhaps?). Dealers can get a bit more because they offer the peace of mind of buying from a dealer, but as we all know, many dealers sell on eBay too. Seems like decent 308's are now running mid-$20's, 328's are running mid $30's to low $40's and 355's are now dropping into the high $60's to mid $70's. (Again, I'm talking about what the bidding is closing at, not the price the sellers are trying to sell them at). I expect that when the replacement for the 360 comes out, we can expect everything to drop some more. (I sure hope so, the 355's need to drop about $30K so I can afford one!!) ;-) Birdman
