Locally I see overzealous speed enforcement and irrationally low speed limits. We've read about cars being crushed for street racing and a headline here recently suggested that excessive speed should be classified as racing whether or not another car is involved. These are all threats to the enjoyment of our cars. Here's a recent story from Car and Driver that illustrates the lack of concern some give to our hobby.

Will we still be driving sports cars in 2025?

I don't see 101mph legislation ever being passed in Germany or Italy.

I also highly doubt that any siginificant proportion of traffic fatalities are caused by cars going 110mph or some triple digit speed. Drunks, unskilled drivers, inattentive/distracted drivers and inappropriate speed for the weather conditions are the real problems. A drunk in a Buick scares me more than some guy taking his F430 for a drive. One guy doesn't give a shiit about his car or himself; the other is worried about stone chips.

If you take your Ferrari for a 172mph spin in the United States, you're looking at jail time as things stand. I don't see what problem needs to be solved here - unless someone :)eek:) is trying to get re-elected and needs an issue.

here in LA the trend is to put cameras at hot-spot intersections. evidently in the UK this has been elevated to a 1984 Orwellian Police State sort of condition, with some interest groups actually destroying some of them.

the premise of safety is also 1/2 true. often it is the performance enthusiasts who are the ones driving much better. it is the typical meandering person on the cell phone who feels entitled to make others' driving experiences akin to babysitting that are the hazards.

drunks and gang-bangers running from the cops notwithstanding, driving aggressively 15 or 30 mph over the limit is not in and of itself dangerous if the person knows what they are doing. it is often the overly defensive and slower drivers that create the endangerments.

get a good radar detector and laser jammer, and a good license plate cover that blurs out the images on cameras. fight back.

Germany would never let this happen. What they should really be pushing for is better gas mileage for every day cars. The millions upon millions of cars that are driven daily should be the ones that are focused on. The car's that are driven one or two times a month that can speed down the autobahn and other roads are not the cause of the problem.
