A couple of years ago I stumbled upon a site (now dead-- and I no longer have the URL) that offered a service to modify a QV throttle body. They machined out the ID and fitted a larger diameter butterfly, from what I remember. Anyone have any knowledge of this and the possible gains on a otherwise stock 3.2 QV?

IT was kermit (durable1)....we think he's in jail now or on his way :(

Do a search, someone tried it on the dyno and gained nothing, but that was which opening up the the plenum to match, just bolting on the TB

I remember what Mark is talking about. I think they actually lost some power because the opening on the intake wasn't big enough. I don't remember actually how much more they got, 5hp?, maybe, but that was after they opened up the intake to the same diameter of the throttle body opening.

I tried ALL mods to Bosch continuous injection on a BMW. Do not waste your money, none of them work. Trust me. If you really want more power, switch to Weber's.

I've always had a fondness for these carbs, and always ran them on my Formula B, and F2 cars I raced for years (side draft DCOE's and Dellorto's). However-- I do not believe I could legally do a conversion and get it through the smog test visual inspection.

If somebody out there has done this successfully, I'd sure like to hear from them.

Back onto the TB mods-- I read through that entire thread, but it ended before the second dyno run was performed with a properly port-matched set-up. What was the outcome?

thanks for the link to the thread.

I had one of Kermits very first TBs, let him mod a 308gtsi one I had for my 328, I never installed it and gave it to the new owner of my 328 when I sold it.

The reason I never installed it was the 328 just ran so well even considering high 85000+ miles, I didn't want to chance it. The test done is really pointless unless you enlarge the plenium which they did not, I can see how it would reduce power as well since its creating turbulence with the plenium lip.

The biggest concern I had was when you enlarge the TB you can have higher HP in the upper power band but low end can suffer.

I sort of came to the conclusion 15 more HP is not that significant anyway if this mod worked and if I wanted real power it would require carbs/cams or a newer car which I ended up buying a 355

If it works it would be a cheap way to get more hp though

When I did the EFI install I considered modding the TB but instead bought one made for a Mustang from Summit racing - 75mm. MUCH cheaper than modding the stock TB and it had the fittings on it for the throttle position sensor and idle control motor. An adapter plate (1/2" Al stock) served to bolt it up to the plenum. No idea if the extra bore really does any good as too much changed in the EFI setup to make a direct comparison. It was just easier to do it this way ..

    I LOVE IT!

I read through your link and I must say, fantastic job! So how many extra horsies did you get from this mod?

    Thanks Ernie,

I've not dyno'd it, so really don't know. It just runs SO much smoother all the way around. Actually most noticeable at low RPM. Makes the car much more "drivable." And when you give it "stick" the power comes on at a much lower RPM. I'm gonna wait to do any dyno testing until I put a new clutch in. The old one is VERY thin and the new one has been sitting in the garage nearly a year ..

    cheers,
    - Frank
