What you guys like to put on the throttle cable for lube? ATF? Motorcycle cable lube?

I’m putting a new cable in tonight and just wonder if any had something they had good luck with.

Verell says Motorcycle Cable Lube is best and have no reason to doubt him. i used some motorcycle chain lube as that is what i had on hand.

Normal motor oil for me, straight 30wt. Hold the end of the cable vertical, put a drop on where it goes in the sheath, then blow it in the sheath with the compressor (turn the pressure down). Repeat 5 or 6 times on each end. For the linkages (pedal, throttle) I use white lithium grease, usually with a small drop of oil mixed in to thin it out just a touch.

    Just my $.02.

Thanks. I was leaning toward the motorcycle cable lube, since it is made for cables....I think it's just medium oil, about 30wt, with a solvent in it to help get it down inside the cable.

As a side note, it's very different from chain lube. Chain lube is thicker and usually a bit sticky so it stays stuch to the chain as it whirls around the sprockets....it does lubicate well though.

Don't over-look the cable lubers made for cycles, they seal the end of the cable while the pressure in the lube can injects lube the full length of the cable. The cable lubes seem to be a dry lubricant (graphite or moly) in a solvent. May have an oil in suspension also. Been years since I read the lables.

Steven, good luck with your chain lube, most chain lubes are a heavy wax in a solvent, some chance that it'll thicken up & get gummy over time.

Cut out a small hole in the corner of a plastic sandwich bag. Put the end of the cable in the hole. Secure the bag around the hole very tightly. Hang the bag from the ceiling and pour in lube of choice until it covers the inner and outer cable. Wait- oil will come out the other end.
