Hi all, Some insight please from friends here. My ‘84 QV is running brilliantly but I can’t say it’s a wonderful experience to drive each time. Big feet ok so some fumbling going on down there, but it’s the throttle smoothness that irritates me mostly. It’s almost as though there are a series of defined steps when I press the throttle pedal. That makes certain slight lurches when mooching around town. When pressing higher up the pedal it sort of smoothes it out a bit. Wondering how smooth the pedal progression should be and is with yours. Is there something I should oil, grease or do, but the car has been driven and extensively serviced by experts. Kind regards! Tony
1. Tight-fitting driving shoes are a must for me. “Normal” size shoes are not cleanly effective and I end up fighting myself! 2. Very important: No floor mat at all. Since I’m not an “engine” or linkage guy I can’t say much more - except that the highly precise air flow “meter” (I’ll call it a micro management dam) must work perfectly. My understanding is that flat horizontal metal dam you can see and push a little is only one side of the device. The other side (which you can’t readily see) is a vertical needle plunger (which moves up and down) might be dirty or sticky. My comments on that air flow mechanism are, I warn, just my non-mechanic understanding. Smarter folks will perhaps give a much better answer. SG Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Many thanks for the response! Yes bought some driving shoes with a Ferrari logo (trainers/sneakers type) haha. Ah, so the air flow meter in the engine compartment presumably controlled by a cable from the pedal. Will take a look. Can’t find anything about the pedal control or lubrication in the owners manual or the workshop manual so presumably the pedal has a cable or other type of linkage but can’t see a service requirement. Will also check the floor carpet! Kind regards! Tony
The gas pedal pivots on two small ball bearings. It has probably never been cleaned and regreased. Beyond that the throttle cable itself can stick. Shoot some teflon based lubricant down the tube that the cable dissapears into near the throttle body. Some people replace the cable which can fray, but some lubricant might solve for things. Inside the fuel distributor, there is a plunger with rubber o ring that can get sticky. You might run some marvel msytery oil in the fuel, could clean up some fuel deposits, but if the plunger is sticking the solution is a rebuild of the fuel distributor. You can only really check the plunger movement by removing the distributor.
On my car, it's the roller inside the throttle actuator control curve. I'll have to replace it soon. It's sliding despite being lubricated, instead of rolling through the curve. This curve does create a progressive throttle response vs pedal input. And it is very disturbing in car parks and traffic jams when it's not smooth but jumps... nope I'll have to make one. Its axis is riveted in. I am sure in my case it's the roller. The pedal is smooth and the cable new. I can see the roller not rolling. I've driven too much!
That all most helpful, thank each of you so much! I’m going to check each of those things and try to see what’s what. My wife can sit in the car and help move the things even though she doesn’t quite get just how wonderful these things are. At 6ft 4 with a giraffe body this car fits me perfectly so a really expensive model usefully wouldn’t fit me anyway. Cheers all!
Mine did exactly the same thing last fall. Was really difficult in stop & go traffic on steep hills. Sprayed some lube on the roller noted above, and it was perfect. Not often you get a 30 second free fix for a drivabilty issue.
One more vote for the roller on throttle body. I had the same symptoms, and it was extremely annoying to drive with partial throttle at 40km/h or so. Some brake cleaner and lubricant to roller and it was perfect again. Easy to confirm by using the throttle by hand and by pulling the cable by your hand on engine bay.
