I changed all the batteries (duracell), and I even changed the back up battery. The thing still won't turn on! It is about to go airborne out the window. Is it broken or is there some button combination I can press or some way to turn it on?

Dunno about the 83, but I have an old TI-85 that has a display that is only barely visible with brand new batteries. Too bad - otherwise was always a pretty great calculator.

Rechargeable batteries usually self-discharge after 30-45 days; so most will need some kind of charging before use depending on how long they were on the store shelf.

you still having this problem? The only thing that I can think of is that the calculator is actually working. The problem lies in the contrast settings that makes the screen so clear that it practically looks off. Try turning the contrast up. Repeatedly hit 2nd up.

That was a good prank among classmates during high school. It was kind of stupid, because you knew who was the "nerd". Although the games on the calculator got me through Geometry. :D
