Hope this is not a repost boys. I am just proud that my country is being represented again. I still can't get over the loss of the Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril Portugal.....But this is the best F1 news to come out of Portugal.

    Enjoy.

    MONTEIRO FILLS PORTUGUESE VOID
    Last Updated: Saturday, 05, February, 2005, 17:58

Like his new Jordan team-mate Narain Karthikeyan, Tiago Monteiro is acutely aware that he will be filling a void in F1 this season. The last time Portuguse fans had a grand prix driver of their own to cheer was during Pedro Lamy’s stint with Minardi in the mid-1990s.

Monteiro said: “Portugal was waiting for an F1 driver for nearly 10 years and the fact that I’m going to represent my country and the Portuguese culture all over the world makes me proud and gives me so much motivation.

“I also have a special thought for all my friends and supporters in France where I have done most of my racing career. It’s great to start with Jordan and the addition of Midland and all the Carlin people I have been racing with is a big plus.”

Monteriro becomes only the fourth Portuguese F1 driver in history, following in the footsteps of Mario de Araujo Cabral (a little-known semi-professional who raced privately entered Coopers in the late 1950s and early 1960s), Pedro Chaves and Lamy.

However, Portugal has a much more extensive heritage in terms of hosting grands prix, having staged races on the Oporto and Monsanto Park road circuits in 1958-60 and more recently at the Estoril autodrome, where the last Portuguese GP was held in 1996.
