So, here is the scoop. My son went to court two weeks ago. He had a statement prepared and decided to plead guilty! He is a man of very high character and honesty and said that he wanted to accept responsibility for his actions. I discouraged him from doing this but went to support him by sitting in the court. The judge was surprised by his plea and allowed him to read his statement. He was repentant and sincere. He humbly asked that the violation be reduced from a 2 point violation to a 1 point and that he could keep his license. He offered to pay a higher fine and do community service. The judge then asked him if he would accept a postponed sentence. That confused him so the judge explained, "if I sentence you today, I'm taking your license." So, my son said, "of course". The judge than suggested that my son volunteer to do 40 hours of community service through a specific organization and return in a month for sentencing. He will consider the request to reduce the infraction and not suspend his license when he returns if he has completed the community service. Reading between the lines, it's a done deal if he finishes the community service. All in all, I'm very proud of my son and we will see how it plays out in May. But, I think it is a harsh but reasonable lesson.

Well here its against the law. As for lower accident rate, I am willing to bet if you do indeed have a lower rate of accidents, at that speed you also have more fatalities per accident. As for stupid, Its hard to judge the intelligence of some moron passing you at 120MPH and endangering you and your family..

I was pulled over once while trailing someone in a much better car (while I was in college in CA) and I remember that the officer wrote me up for a lower speed than I was traveling because it would have been a reckless driving infraction. Unless something has changed, the rule in CA is the same as PA (however the penalty seems to give the officer/courts some subjective space to determine how to hammer the person who was caught).

Wow - a reasonable Judge - hard to come by. This is like an ad hoc PTI (pre-trial intervention) where the sentence is held off unless the guilty party does not comply with set expectations (rehab, community service, etc). Obviously this senario is a much less offense, but the structure is similar.

    JSL,

You should be extremely proud of your son and his actions in court. I'm sure he struck a note with the judge. You should also be extremely proud of your wife and yourself to have raised such a son with fortitude ,courage, truthfulness etc. not seen much in todays' world!
Your story was a breath of fresh air.

    OP-

Let me guess, the location of the ticket was +/- 30 miles from King Cty on highway 101.

    Plead not guilty
Waive your right for a "speedy trial" in writing to the court.
Get a lawyer to get it down from 2 points and maybe traffic school if he is eligible (no ticket in previous 18 months)

The money you save from the insurance rate increase will easily pay for the lawyer.

Best of luck to your son.

Thank you, we are very proud of both of our twin sons. Both are men of very high character. One recently made me a grandpa for the first time. We can't take any credit though, we give it to a strong and well grounded faith.

Nope, just a country road. It's already done. He plead guilty and is doing his community service. I think he came out just fine given the options.

    Congrats!

I must have missed that last post of yours.

In my experience, I have always been straightforward with the LEO when pulled over. In the last 10 years I have been pulled over about 6 times, only twice did I get the ticket. On one ticket I plead not guilt and trial by declaration which was a written opinion to the court and it was dismissed, and the second time I did online traffic school which took 30 minutes.

Most of the time the LEO's and Courts receive excuse after excuse. If you are straight with them your chances to stand-out, in a good way, help you get off.

I did get pulled over once for triple-digit speeds in a Ferrari, and negotiated the nice officer down to 90 in the middle of the night, on the way to Vegas.

    Final Installment!
Today was my son's followup hearing. He did what he told the judge he would do and preformed community service. The judge really surprised us both. We had hoped that the infraction would be reduced to under 100 and points from 2 to 1. But, much to our surprise, the judge reduced the speed to 64 from 113 and allowed traffic school to wipe out the record and the point! We had prayed for grace and he was willing to accept whatever the consequences were. But, we never expected it to come out this well. My final analysis, CHARACTER COUNTS! My son is a man of high character who was transparent, honest and willing to accept his consequences. Needless to say, great lesson learned and I am very proud of my son. He is a man of integrity. This time, he also caught a BIG break.

Good for you all. Character does count, with cops and judges. Sounds like he was just driving very fast on the highway. Against the rules, yes, but probably much safe to do 113 in a newer BMW than to do 80 in a clapped out VW.

That is absolutely hilarious, and I have a similiar story:

I was going just under 130 on an empty part of I-80 in Iowa when I hit a friggin BIRD - right about where the rear view mirror is glued to the windshield.
God must have been smiling because the poor dude didn't break the windshield, but all I saw in my rearview mirror was a poof of feathers. And since then, about 16 years ago, I have gone over 100 maybe a couple of times, to 105~, and have not been over 95 in 10 years.
    I'm getting old.
