At the Concorso I got pulled over and ticketed by the City of Seaside Police for no front license plate on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. near Laguna Seca. I have attended this event for the last 15 years and have never been "targeted" like this before. As the officer could see, I was one of hundreds of cars without a front license plate. After spending a great deal of money in the Monterey area for this event and then to be treated in that manner, makes me not want to attend this event in the future.

Well, you were breaking the law.

Maybe we don't spend enough money in Seaside and they just want their taste?

Agree that this is penny-wise and pound foolish. Sadly, this is typical of most of our governments these days.

Very unfortunate. I've been in attendance over the last 3 years and have had no bad experiences with parking effacement. In fact, it usually seems that they are very laxadasical with regards to issuing such tickets on this week. I have gotten a parking ticket for leaving my non-exotic vehicle in a parking space in Carmel fir greater than the Two hour limit. However, during concours week I have left my Ferrari parked in the same place on Ocean Ave. for more than 2 hours with no ticket issued. In fact, the police were rather helpful this year, as we had to call them to get a drunk Local out of our hired cab when she insisted that that was the can that she ordered. We had been using the same cab driver to drive us around from Monterey to Carmel. The police promptly came and arrested her as she tried to insult us with "Eurotrash" comments as she was being hauled away.

Typical example of your tax dollars being spent on kids in cop outfits. They are being watched over by housewives and career politicians.

Nothing surprises me anymore after I was thrown in jail for 5 days for something I had absolutely no connection with.

Cops and the legal system are out of control. Thank the women in politics.

Albert, you get preferred treatment because the cops think that you are Erik Estrada.

    Yeah, maybe
That's got to be it. Ha ha.
Seriously, Just got pulled over out here (on the big Island) on Waikoloa Village Dr. clocked at 20 mph over the speed limit. The roads on the big island are so fabulous. Luckily the officer let me go with a warning. Somehow, I think it had more to do with my 2 year old son crying in his carseat in the back than my looks. The poor guy who got pulled over in front of me did not appear to be so lucky. :)

I remember meeting someone on a FOG drive who still has the temporary DMV registration on his windshield, a paper plate on the rear and, of course, no front plate. I naturally asked if the car (a 430) was new to him and was surprised when he told me he's had the car for 3 or 4 years!

He said he never gets hassled about front (or rear) plates, and owes it to his temp tag and paper plate setup. Evidently, meter mollies and regular officers see the temp tag but don't read closely and the car is kept meticulously new-looking, so since it looks like a new car (which can be driven with this plateless configuration legally in California - but it's supposed to be limited to something like 90 days), they just pass and move on to the next car.

I've since tried this on my new DD, and it so far has worked, even in front plate ticket happy San Francisco (knock on wood!). When I get my first (fix it) ticket for this, I guess I'll then decide whether to keep this up or get a front plate put on my DD.

True, but if that happens, the front plate issue is the least of my concerns. The idea is to avoid the ticket that comes from parking the car and leaving it prey to the parking enforcement people.

Sure wish police would focus on traffic violations that can injure (or kill) people to build up local revenues, oh, like running Stop signs or red lights, or clearly distracted hands-ON driving while gabbing or texting on cell phone. Based on what I see that would be like shooting fish in a barrel...

It's never enforced that I know of. I've driven for years without them, and been stopped by the police without them, and never been ticketed.

CA on the other hand like it because it's a nice cash cow. Don't pull into LAX or any of the county owned parking lots or you'll be ticketed in 60 seconds. That's all they look for is front plate violations, expired tags, etc.

I wonder why? Maybe... they need the money?

    Just a couple of things:

No registration, and no front plate tickets can be a moving violation even if you are parked on private property.

You have only 20 days to register a car in CA. They can't even afford to wait until the next billing cycle.

The paper plate trick works for years.

Yes. Although to be clear, I never suggested not registering the car. Just continuing to display the paper temp. registration in the lower right corner of windshield (while also displaying issued regular rear plate with current stickers, etc. so that all is normal looking from rear).

In all honesty, the best remedy is to have a front plate IF that is what is required by law in California. If you don't then you open yourself to being stopped and/or cited for the violation. How much money you spent, the fact you are a visitor, or what type of vehicle you were operating should not excuse you from being stopped or cited for a violation. If you think it does, your attitude is half the problem.

That said, I agree that it is a chicken s**t reason for a stop and even more of a chicken s**t ticket to write. If he was under my command and I saw that come across my desk, or on his activity report, we would probably have a nice conversation about writing this kind of nonsense, especially when his efforts could be better directed to apprehending/citing those who actually represent a danger to the public. I might also remind him that people don't get to the detective bureau by nickel and diming otherwise law abiding persons for bulls**t, but rather by doing good police work that takes criminals off the streets.

I have not, nor ever will attend that hyped up car show. My F355 Fiorano has no front plate. Never will. It makes the car ugly. Can't have that. Cop was suffering from Ferrari Envy. A mortal sin.

Translation: The law should not apply to the wealthy. Get real.

If you think the law is silly, you should expend your energy trying to get the law changed (best of luck with that!). The reasons a front plate are beneficial to law enforcement are obvious, as are the reasons the typical car owner wants to run without one. But the point is, we all know the law exists, and if you choose to flaunt that law, you kind of give up any right to complain about being ticketed for it. You are not "entitled" to be exempt from the law, no matter how much you paid.

Just a FYI for next year since most of us run our cars without front plates. There is a shop in the San Ramon area that has a license plate holder for a 360.
