Got a ticket on Friday on US66 in Virginia for reckless driving. My first ticket so I am a little unsure what to do. I've heard Va was notorious for tickets. I called the NY DMV right after I got pulled over and was told that no points will transfer over to NY, but I do not want a reckless driving ticket on my record. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your ticket as well Sefac. My court date is on January 16th all the way down in Va. If mine is before yours I will keep you posted on what happened.

Pay it. If points don't transfer the charge won't either.

I used to live in DC and drove 66 to get to work out in Vienna. I'd get tickets once a quarter. I paid them. Never saw them on my record.

Dont worry about points trannsfering over, they wont...what you should worry about is VA sucks with tickets and that if you read your ticket I am sure you have to show up in court to address it. Not just send a lawyer, your physical appearence is required.

Been there drove to VA cop lost at the trial :) but it still sucked to have to go down there for a 78 mph ticket.

Mine was for a lot more then 78mph though. Yes, I do have to show up in court in person. It sucks because I was on my way down to Tennessee when I got the ticket so I was pretty far down. I don't think I have seen so many people pulled over in such a short period of time either, wow.

was what it that the judge said Rob: 'you got your Christmas present early?'.

The people before you weren't doin so well...Guilty, Guilty and more Guilty.

Wreckless driving?? how fast were you going or was it something else? I have heard of cases in virginia where they haul you in for that. Before you go down on your own find out what the maximum fine is. You don't want to find out when you're there that its 30 days behind bars. I never liked Virginia as far as motoring.

    Well good luck.

I got a ticket doing 80 in a 50 on Rt. 66 in Virginia, reckless as well. I showed up in court and the prosecutor offered me a plea for unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, 0 points and $100 + $50 court cost. It was annoying that I had to go back down, but it turned out ok once i went to court.

Hmmm... college kid, "a lot more then [sic.] 78mph". Well, do us a favor and contest the ticket, and show up for the court appearance. New York tags on the car? It will be a good object lesson for you. Down there, they throw young guys, especially college kids from NY, in jail for a few days for speeding way over the limit. It will be a good object lesson for you. Maybe you'll learn to drive just a little more conservatively and not put the rest of us out there at risk.

Otherwise, be smart and listen to the folks that say just pay it. Of course, did you check the ticket -- are you sure it didn't say "court appearance required"? Sometimes, things like reckless driving do require a court appearance.

FasterisBetter I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic or not, but I am just trying not to get locked up for something I unintentionally did. I knew I was over the limit, but not to the extent the officer said he clocked me at, nor driving recklessly. I had an important phone call I was on as I was accelerating concentrating solely on the road. When I was pulled over, the only time I looked at my speedo, it was a bit under 80mph. Yes, it does say that a court appearance is required.

I will pay it, if it is just a fine. Just not sure what exactly the penalty is and if I should hire a lawyer or not.

Thanks everyone for the help so far.

If the ticket says you must appear, and you don't, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. It will sit on your record, and if you get stopped again, you could find yourself is a pack of trouble. I'd suggest contacting a lawyer in the town where you are to appear in court and discuss it with him. If it's a small town, a good local lawyer might be able to plead you to a lesser offense without you even appearing, and you just pay the fine. It might cost a few bucks, but will save you a couple of days of your time, unless you are in school down there. In most places, especially small towns in rural areas, they take "reckless driving" charges fairly seriously. But a good local lawyer can often take care of the problem with a call or two.

Tha's an excellent idea. I have a V1 and when i go thru Virginia it comes down off the windshield. I keep it on and watch my speed if i get a beep i shut it off, just in case the radar detector detectors the cops use would pick me up. Just a reminder Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia.
If you get caught that's another issue. Pretty soon it's going to be illegal to breathe in Virginia.

DO what steve W. tells you. You must appear. virginia is for lovers but not speed lovers! and don't use a radar detector in VA, it is illegal and cops will get pissed off. drive the speed limit, and pay attention to what you are doing, it is not that hard - really is a time saver in the long run, esp. if you have to go back down to VA for this,

I would consult a lawyer and beware of what you read on this board.

I have read numerous ticket threads in the NY/Tri-State section, and there is contradictory information availabe.

I have read, for instance, that although no points transfer to a NY license for out-of-state offenses (this is completely true and can be found in NYS DMV's literature), insurance companies will be able to see an offense committed out of state.

I do not know if this is true, but I have read it, just like I have read that insurance companies do NOT see out-of-state offenses.

One thing is for sure: do not fail to address the ticket or, as someone said, there will be a warrant for your arrest as well as other problems. Don't just pay the ticket; consult an experienced traffic ticket lawyer. You may want to fight the ticket.

    I suggest Frank DeSousa:
    www.ticketproblems.com

You might also consult your Auto Insurance company -- they may be able to tell you right off the bat whether they see out-of-state offenses.

I know I am bringing this one back from the way dead but figured it might help someone out in the future.

After writing the DA a letter for a continuance, which was granted, I hired a lawyer. A copy of my driving record was mailed to my lawyer. My record was and still is clean minus this one incident. Lawyer represented me and got another trial date. Officer showed up all three times. On the date of the trial I received a $500 fine, 60 day license suspension for VA only, as well as reckless driving charge. No points on my license, no insurance rate fluctuations, no jail time(anything over 90 which I was clocked can incur time), and most importantly lesson learned. If anyone is in the same situation I was in and need a recomendation I would be glad to help out in anyway possible.

So it cost you over $1000.00 with attorney fees and no points/jailtime?. Not bad considering you were tagged at over 90. As mentioned, Virginia does not like speeders comming through. Did you have to travel back 3 times as well or just the attorney?

I hate Virginia. When I drive to florida, i take it easy thru virginia, and when the next state line comes up, i take it right back up to 100. that state is a nazi state!! absolutely pathetic. there are people that get shot, beaten up, nearly killed, and all they get is a $3000 fine, yet the put speeders in jail. shame on them. Cops down there are a bunch of ******s.

Came in at $10xx.xx. I received a check back from my lawyer for about $200. I was thinking the same thing it turned out ok, considering the severe penalties many receive. The two things that helped the most were my clean record and that I was completely honest and cooperative with the cop when he pulled me over. Luckily I did not have to go back down at anytime after my ticket.

steveGTO I believe Virginia recently changed the law to up the fine for speeding. I believe speeding can incur a ticket cost of well over $1500!!!! Won't be down there anytime soon.
